Things to do in  Northeast Brazil

Sun, smiles, and samba

Brazil’s northern beaches are the kind that postcards don’t do justice: swathes of powder-white sands and glassy blue waters fringed with a wild toupée of coconut palms. Beyond the beaches, this is a region infused with Afro-Brazilian culture and rhythms, whether dancing the samba in San Salvador, listening to frevo in Recife, or joining the carnival procession in Olinda. The best things to do in Northeast Brazil are still coastal: cruise the Parnaíba Delta, dive the Fernando de Noronha islands, and ride a buggy through the Lençóis Maranhenses dunes.

When to visit

It’s sunny enough to hit the beach year-round in northeast Brazil, but the most popular time is summer, from December through March. It’s worth braving the crowds to experience Carnival, especially the renowned riotous celebrations in San Salvador, Recife, and Olinda. The rainy season runs from mid-February through mid-August, but the daily downpours aren’t normally too bad in February and March.

Getting around

Northeast Brazil is huge—there are more than 1,550 miles (2,500 kilometers) of coastline between San Salvador da Bahia and São Luis do Maranhão—so while long-distance buses provide an option for backpackers, it’s often more convenient to fly. Regular domestic flights connect the main cities, and others connect in Rio or San Salvador. For safety reasons, renting a car isn’t recommended unless you’re experienced driving in Brazil; the alternative is to join a multi-day tour or cruise.

Traveler tips

While the coast deserves attention, there are incredible national parks inland, too. Bahia’s Chapada Diamantina National Park has fantastic hikes leading to dramatic flat-topped cliffs, forested canyons, and waterfalls—you can visit a diamond mine. The UNESCO-listed Serra da Capivara National Park is another highlight, where the rocky landscapes hide the oldest prehistoric rock art sites in the Americas.
