Things to do in  Goma

DRC at its most picturesque

Sprawled alongside tranquil Lake Kivu, with the volcanic silhouette of Mount Nyiragongo looming overhead, Goma has to be one of the Great Rift Valley’s most picturesque cities. Its waterside villas wouldn’t look out of place in Lake Como, but—unlike in Italy—here in the Democratic Republic of Congo, you’re only a drive away from Virunga National Park, home to endangered gorillas. Prefer to stick to city limits? You’ll find plenty of things to do in Goma beyond the region’s esteemed nature, from marketplaces and art galleries to poetry slams and film festivals.

When to visit

Plan on visiting during either the long dry season (roughly June to September) or the shorter dry season (December to February), especially if your trip includes gorilla trekking or other outdoor activities. Heavy rain leads to flooded-out roads and can cause major delays. Also, be sure to check the latest travel advisories; while Goma itself is typically safe, the province of North Kivu has been troubled by ongoing conflict.

Getting around

Goma is home to its own international airport, making getting in and out of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo a piece of cake. Many long-haul flights connect in Addis Ababa. It is also possible to cross overland into Goma from Rwanda—the border is less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the city center—but you’ll want to make sure your visas and vaccinations are in order and check up-to-date security warnings. Once inside Goma, it’s easy to get around by taxi.

Traveler tips

If you plan on trekking at high altitudes—for example, the Mount Nyiragongo summit, located in Virunga National Park, has an elevation of 11,380 feet (3,470 meters)—then don’t forget to allot at least a day or two to acclimate in Goma before setting out. Expect a challenging climb over steep, volcanic terrain, and bring appropriate footwear and equipment. Remember that you’ll need a hiking permit from the park—they risk selling out, so book yours well in advance of your trip.

Q:How long should I spend in Goma?
A:

That depends. If you plan on trekking or exploring parts of North Kivu outside the city, then you could easily spend anywhere from several days to a week here. In any case, plan on at least a night or two—it’s a pleasant stopover on any high-adventure DRC itinerary.
