Things to do in  Florianopolis

Brazil’s greatest hits

It's easy to see why Brazilians call Florianopolis Ilha da Magia (Magic Island). Home to vast swathes of white sand, frothy waves perfect for surfing, and hiking trails that lead to Jurassic Park-like landscapes, Floripa (its nickname) boasts the best of Brazil. Things to do here include kitesurfing and kayaking on Lagoa da Conceição, sandboarding on the Joaquina Sand Dunes, and cooling off with deep purple acaí bowls on picture-perfect beaches like Praia Mole. Many travelers take the boat to Ilha do Campeche, home to lush rainforest and crystal-clear water.

When to visit

For the fewest crowds, coolest temperatures, and the best surfing waves, visit Florianopolis in winter (May-August). In the peak summer season (November–January), Brazilians flock from the state of Santa Catarina and beyond, causing hours-long traffic jams around the island and boosting accommodation prices. Florianopolis’ carnival celebrations in late February are fabulous, but book your hotel well in advance.

Getting around

Florianopolis is home to more than 310 miles (500 kilometers) of coastline, so it’s worth having a car to scope out more secluded beaches and reach hiking trailheads. Rideshare apps such as Uber are readily available and inexpensive ways to travel, but buses can be infrequent and unreliable. There are plenty of bike lanes across the island, and the east side surrounding Lagoa da Conceição is an excellent place to cycle.

Traveler tips

For some of the best views on the island, take the Lagoinha do Leste hiking trail. It leads to a lookout point that provides stunning views of Praia da Lagoinha do Leste, a crescent of sand fringed by emerald green jungle and lapped by turquoise waters. A rocky overhang is the perfect place to perch for a photo, and the trail takes you through an unspoiled forest home to monkeys and reptiles. The trail down to the beach is rocky and steep, so wear sturdy shoes and bring ample water.
