Things to do in  Central Kenya

Welcome to the wild

Stretching north of Nairobi along the eastern brink of the Great Rift Valley, Central Kenya unfolds in a rolling panorama of cloud-skimming mountains, lush jungle, and sprawling shambas (crop fields). A string of national parks top the list of things to do in Central Kenya. So whether you fancy scaling Africa’s second-highest peak at Mt. Kenya, hiking around a volcanic crater at Mt. Longonot, or spotting rhinos, lions, and leopards at Aberdare and Meru national parks, this region has you covered. Alternatively, try white-water rafting, mountain biking, or a horseback safari.

When to visit

Temperatures are notably cooler in the highlands of Central Kenya, and the region’s proximity to the equator can make for a mixed bag of weather conditions. The two wet seasons are best avoided if possible—there are “long rains” from March through May and “short rains” from October through November. For favorable hiking weather, the best windows of opportunity are January-February and July-August.

Getting around

Renting a car or joining a guided safari tour is the most convenient way to explore Central Kenya’s national parks, but it’s also easy to get around by public transport. Private long-distance buses link all the major towns and cities, while taxis and matatu (shared minivans) have you covered for shorter hops. The latter is as much a local experience as it is a transport option, but don’t expect much in the way of comfort.

Traveler tips

Cruise across the hippo-filled waters of Lake Naivasha to Crescent Island, where you’ll find one of Kenya’s most unique safari experiences. Reachable only by boat, the isolated sanctuary lets you walk amid free-roaming giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and wildebeest. It’s worth exploring with one of the island guides (make sure to tip as they work on a voluntary basis), but you’ll need to organize your own transport to the island with one of the local boat operators.
