The highlight of the family-friendly Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona (Museu Blau), devoted primarily to natural history, is the Planet Life exhibition, which chronicles the history of life on Earth. Among its extensive collection, the museum has exhibits that trace Earth’s changes over the ages and all the animals and other organisms that call it home, complete with fossils, dinosaur skeletons, rocks, minerals, and its own rooftop garden.

Salt Mountain, deep in Catalonia’s countryside, was once one of the world’s most important salt mines. Visitors to the Salt Mountain Cultural Park (El Parque Cultural de la Montana de Sal) can tour the 280-foot (85-meter) deep mine to see its beautiful formations, such as jagged stalactites, stalagmites, and deposits of various minerals, including potassium salt. Streaks of gray and reddish-brown salts enhance the mountain cave’s natural beauty, while a museum showcases the machinery once used in its heyday.

Revealing the region’s ancient history, Empúries is a hidden gem in the Costa Brava, well worth taking some time away from the beach for. Once a grand city founded by the Greeks and then occupied by the Romans, the area’s archaeological excavations show the remains of buildings, city walls, and even statues.

It may no longer be a working brewery, but the Old Estrella Damm Brewery (Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm) still invites visitors to see old equipment and machinery once used on-site, learn about the history of Barcelona’s iconic beer brand through the permanent exhibit of its historical archive, and, of course, sample different beers. The space also hosts cultural and musical events, including shows, concerts, and festivals.

Explore works of contemporary Catalan art at the Fran Daurel Foundation (Fundació Fran Daurel). Located within the Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) in Montjuïc, the museum is home to a permanent collection of more than 300 works, an outdoor sculpture garden with more than 40 sculptures, and frequent temporary exhibitions.

One of Sitges’ most spectacular museums, the Maricel Museum (Museu de Maricel) houses more than 1,000 years of Catalan art, situated on the village’s waterfront. Among its extensive collection are many sculptures, but also ornate altarpieces, baroque furniture, and modernist paintings, showcasing the region’s enduring artistic legacy. While you won’t find any bold-face global names here, the hall of neoclassical sculptures—arranged against arches that frame the ocean—is alone worth the price of admission.

At the MónNatura Delta de l’Ebre Nature Reserve—one of Western Europe’s largest wetlands—you can see the restored La Tancada salt works, try your hand at traditional fishing, and, with luck, spot flamingos and other wetland birds. Plus, the observatory offers 360-degree views of the salt pans.

Set in the Catalonian Pyrenees, within reach of hubs like Barcelona and Girona, La Molina is one of Spain’s most popular ski resorts. Incorporated in 1943, it was the country’s first such resort, but that doesn’t mean it’s stuck in the past: today it’s home to 68 slopes, the biggest superpipe in the region, and a large snowpark.

Perched high in the Montserrat range, the Montserrat Monastery (Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey) is one of Catalonia’s most spiritual attractions, surrounded by natural beauty. Behind the 16th-century Gothic and Renaissance-style facade of the Palau Cervelló, the Moco Museum Barcelona is anything but traditional. Brimming with cutting-edge modern and contemporary art, the museum presents household-name artists alongside a multisensory digital art space. In a city filled with gardens, Barcelona's Labyrinth Park of Horta (Parc del Laberint d'Horta) ranks among the oldest and least well-known. Housed in a repurposed textile factory, Otto Zutz Club has been a mainstay of the Barcelona club scene since the mid-1980s. One of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful botanical gardens, cliff-top Jardí Botànic de Cap Roig hosts hundreds of species over 42 acres (17 hectares), with dazzling sea views and a faux-medieval castle.
