Located in the El Raval neighborhood, the multidisciplinary Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) offers a wide range of programming, including everything from concerts, conferences, and festivals to debates, readings, and workshops. The cultural center also hosts frequent exhibitions on contemporary art and culture. Its location next to the MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona makes it easy to visit as part of a cultural day out in the city.

Pine and oak forests draw locals and visitors alike to Barcelona’s Collserola Park (Parc de Collserola), which sprawls for nearly 20,000 acres (8,000 hectares) along the city’s northwestern edge. Come to hike, run, and cycle a network of trails, visit the Tibidabo Amusement Park (Parc d'Atraccions Tibidabo), or get a bird’s-eye view of the city from one of Collerola Park’s many scenic overlooks.

La Ribera is a charming maze of streets encompassing the historic area of El Born and bordering the picturesque Ciutadella Park (Parc de la Ciutadella), Barcelona’s principal urban park. As one of the most popular districts in the Ciutat Vella (Old Town), La Ribera teems with intimate cafés, cocktail bars, artisan boutiques, and traditional Catalonian restaurants, and it’s one of the most atmospheric spots to eat, drink, and sleep in the city.

A wine-growing region between Barcelona and Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain, Penedes is certified 100 percent organic. The area is best known for cava, a sparkling white wine native to Spain, but it also produces red, white, and rosé wines. A beautiful, lush area featuring picturesque views of the Mediterranean Sea, Penedes is a can’t-miss destination for oenophiles visiting the country.

Go full throttle at Ferrari Land, the only theme park in Europe devoted to all things Ferrari. Located next to PortAventura theme park outside Barcelona and itself part of PortAventura World, Ferrari Land offers high-speed thrills—including Europe’s highest and fastest vertical accelerator—cutting-edge racing simulators, test tracks, and more.

While it looks like yet another classic Mediterranean fishing village, El Roc de Sant Gaietà is a recent addition to the coast up from the city of Tarragona. This scenic village on the Costa Dorada incorporates a mix of Romanesque, Arabic, and Gothic architecture to give its 20th-century waterfront a sense of history.

A trip to Barcelona isn’t complete without sampling some of Catalonia’s renowned wines, and Familia Torres—one of Spain’s largest and most famous wineries—is the perfect place to start. A sprawling vineyard that reaches across the Penedès region, the winery is owned by the Torres family, whose winemaking legacy dates back more than 150 years.

Designed to resemble a fortified medieval castle, Torre Bellesguard is an underrated gem from celebrated Catalan modernist Antoni Gaudí. Some of its most striking features include oddly angled gabled windows, narrow walkways, crenellated walls, and a tower topped with a mosaic representing the Catalan flag. Inside, the grand interiors are awash with Gothic and art nouveau detailing.

The Frederic Marès Museum (Museu Frederic Marès) houses a collection that was the life’s work of eccentric traveler and sculptor Frederic Marès. Opened in 1948 within Palau Reial Major—a former complex of noble residences in the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)—the museum showcases an array of artifacts, including some of Marès’ own works. It’s a fascinating space crammed with an eclectic selection of Spanish artistic curiosities.

Housed in the former seaside home and workshop of Santiago Rusiñol, the Cau Ferrat Museum (Museu del Cau Ferrat) contains the artist’s collection of artworks, spanning ancient and modernist work. In addition to Rusiñol’s own sculptures, you can see pieces by Picasso, El Greco, and Casas. There’s also a vast collection of wrought iron sculptures and adornments, which Rusiñol sought out throughout his life.

El Tablao de Carmen is a popular Barcelona flamenco show, designed to honor one of the world’s greatest flamenco dancers, Carmen Amaya. Known for her skill, passion, technique, and fiery personality, Carmen—a native of Barcelona—performed at this very site for King Alfonso XIII of Spain for the opening of the 1929 Universal Exposition. Today, El Tablao de Carmen hosts top-class performances, including dinner shows.

The highest mountain in the Collserola range outside Barcelona, Mt. Tibidabo offers the city’s most magnificent viewpoints, and is home to Parc de Collserola, one of the world’s largest metropolitan natural parks. There are several places to take in the 360-degree vistas, including the modernist Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus church, Torre de Collserola TV tower, and the popular Tibidabo Amusement Park (Parc d'Atraccions Tibidabo).

Between France and Spain lie the Pyrenees Mountains, a range that stretches from the Atlantic Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean coast, spanning around 270 miles (430 kilometers). Dividing the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of Europe, these snow-dusted mountains have long been a playground for outdoor adventure, but hilltop castles and alpine villages beckon as well.

Barcelona’s Museum of Illusions is packed with 3D paintings and optical illusions, affording plenty of fun, humorous, and fantastical photo opportunities. Here, you can “step inside” a Dali or Picasso artwork, celebrate with Barcelona’s famous football (soccer) stars, or pose for a hilarious restroom encounter with Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Cardona Castle (Castell de Cardona) sits proudly on a hilltop opposite the mines of Salt Mountain. The stone fortress was built in Gothic and Romanesque styles in the ninth century, and is perhaps the most iconic medieval structure in Catalonia. Inside this symbol of Catalonian identity stands the medieval St. Vicenç Church, which is hailed as a Romanesque architectural masterpiece.

Beach bars abound in Barcelona, but Icebarcelona in the Port Olímpic neighborhood on the waterfront features a unique bar where everything is made of ice—including the walls, bar, seats, and decor. The temperature is kept chilly at 20ºF (-5ºC), but there are parkas and gloves to don. The lively dance scene keeps revelers warm in the freezing temperatures.

Note: The gardens are currently closed for renovations. Located on the slopes of Montjuïc Mountain, the Botanical Garden of Barcelona spans 35 acres (14 hectares) and is home to over 1,300 plant species from around the world. The garden comprises zones featuring plants native to specific countries or areas: Australia, California, South Africa, Chile, and the Mediterranean Basin. It’s the perfect destination to escape the bustle of central Barcelona, and to enjoy panoramic views of the city and sea.

Part of the Penedès region, the town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is the capital of cava, a sparkling wine that’s Spain’s equivalent to French Champagne. The area is home to 80 official wineries specializing in the production and export of cava; the rolling vineyards that surround the cellars offer respite from the bustle of Barcelona. You can visit vineyards, tour production facilities, and taste some of Spain’s best cavas at their source.

With a 19th-century recipe and countless fans, Estrella is among the top beers in Spain, and it’s made in this modern factory in the Barcelona suburb of El Prat de Llobregat—the original Estrella Damm Old Brewery is in the center of Barcelona. For travelers, visiting the Estrella Damm Factory is a chance to see the brewing process up close, on tours followed by a beer tasting.

The Barcelona Music Museum (Museu de la Música) boasts one of the world’s great collections of musical instruments, comprising more than 2,400 pieces that range from traditional to futuristic. In addition to browsing the museum’s holdings, visitors can attend workshops, concerts, and other events highlighting musical topics. Within an interactive gallery, guests of all ages can try their hand at playing a wide range of instruments.

The Gaudí Experience (Gaudí Experiència) explores the life and works of Antoni Gaudí, Barcelona’s favorite son, through interactive exhibits and an augmented reality experience. Highlights include touchscreens, unpublished models, and a 4D virtual reality film that takes you on an immersive journey through the Catalan architect’s most enduring masterpieces. You can also pose for a photo with a to-scale sculpture of the modernist master.

From ancient erotic art to Playboy pinups, fetishism to sex dolls, and Cleopatra to Marilyn Monroe—the Erotic Museum of Barcelona celebrates eroticism in all its diverse forms. The spicy exhibitions chronicle sex and sexuality throughout history up to the modern day, including plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor, fun facts and world records, and household-name artists.

Visually arresting inside and out, the Barcelona Wax Museum brings historical, cultural, and even fictitious figures to life in a 19th-century neoclassical-style mansion just off La Rambla. Here, visitors take an up-close look at over 150 wax figures of important Catalan personalities and internationally recognizable stars, set across 28 themed rooms. Bosc de les Fades—a fairy-tale, forest–themed café attached to the museum—provides a novel venue to grab a drink afterwards.

Find a family-friendly place to play at this Costa Dorada water park. With its 16 pools and attractions, the PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park features lush, Caribbean-inspired pools and greenery. Visitors of all ages can explore the indoor-outdoor campus, with options that range from a laid-back lazy river to adventurous slides and waves.

The Gaudí House Museum (Casa Museu Gaudí) was the home of architect Antoni Gaudí for the last 20 years of his life. Today, his former residence serves as a time capsule of his life and work. Inside, you can see walls covered with his drawings and other original artwork, furniture that the modernist master designed, and an elaborate garden that includes wrought ironwork from Casa Vicens and La Pedrera (Casa Milà).

Set amid the lush forests and rolling vineyards of the Catalonian countryside and located within easy commuting distance of Barcelona, the monastery of Sant Benet de Bages (Món Sant Benet) was once a major Benedictine monastery. Today, it’s one of the region’s most impressively preserved medieval landmarks. However, the painstakingly restored complex is much more than a historic site—it’s also a thriving cultural heritage center combining gastronomy, art, and leisure.

A short trip outside Barcelona on the Costa del Maresme, Illa Fantasia Water Park is a favorite spot for locals and travelers alike to cool off from the summer heat. The park is set up for family-friendly fun, with more than 22 slides, three large pools, a kids’ area, and a picnic and barbecue space, plus attractions ranging from mild to wild, from kids-only to extreme.

Part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range, the Prades Mountains (known locally as the Muntanyes de Prades) are a recognizable massif located just north of Tarragona in Catalonia. Known for its distinctive silhouette, the massif comprises several lofty peaks, attracting outdoor and fitness enthusiasts and ecotourists.

This 19th-century theater on Las Ramblas—Barcelona’s most storied street—is a cultural hub for performances ranging from fiery dance shows to theater acting. While the stage shows are the main draw for visitors, the building itself is impressive, too. Housed within the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, the elegantly designed theater previously functioned as a cinema and a comedy club, and was even the site of skirmishes during the Spanish Civil War.

Once the sun goes down on the beaches of Salou, head to the House of Illusion to catch its popular magic show. This fan favorite offers evening performances with theatrical magicians, family-friendly comedy, and light-hearted mind-reading acts. Opt for the earlier dinner show or the late evening slot for drinks and entertainment.
