Our tour guide David was very nice and willing to answer questions we asked him, but he did not have anything prepared to show us and talk about. Therefore, we didn’t learn very much and weren’t really sure what all we were looking at. He also pressured us not to stop at any restaurants to eat anything because it was all “too overpriced” and we would be paying for “the food, service, and views”. But that was exactly what we were looking for. Then, he failed to provide us with any cheaper acceptable alternatives. It was all well-intentioned, but made for a difficult excursion. I’m not sure if this was unique to our experience as two young women, but Valparaiso seemed very dangerous and sketchy. People stared and whistled at us, and a young local woman even stopped us in the middle of the street and told us we had to take off all our jewelry to be safe. Another woman cleaning the bathroom at the bus station told us to be careful because there were “a lot of very bad people” in Valparaiso. After spending a day there, I would NOT recommend visiting Valparaiso. I felt uncomfortable and unsafe there. I wish we had spent more time in Santiago instead.

Safest way to see Valparaiso and learn so much about the history

We very much enjoyed our tour and would HIGHLY recommend the best way to see this area safely is to have a local guide. Our guide, Luis, took great care of us. We learned so much about the city, saw great art and even had a few nice treats here and there. He even helped us get some groceries.

Luis was a fantastic guide. To start off with, he was super flexible on timing as we had some unexpected delays, he was very communicative via WhatsApp in advance, he is extremely knowledgeable about the city and happy to just have real conversation about real things. Not to mention he knows the best places to go to see all the amazing murals. He also voluntarily gave more of his time beyond the scheduled amount of time.
