There’s no fee to visit Mt. Rotui independently for hiking or sightseeing. However, it’s a good idea to take a guided tour so you can learn more about the landscape, and so the guide can lead the way. Expect to pay around US$60–70 for a half-day group tour that includes a visit to Mt. Rotui alongside other nearby attractions, such as Magic Mountain and the Belvedere Lookout.

Viewpoints of Mt. Rotui are included on some Moorea sightseeing tours, which include several other scenic places on the same trip. If you’re an experienced climber you can also summit the 2,949-foot (899-meter) peak, but you’ll need technical climbing equipment—the mountain is sheer in places.

Climbing Mt. Rotui is more than a hike—it’s a technical mountain climb, and you’ll need experience to match. It’s described as an expert-level technical climb, and one of the most dangerous in French Polynesia, but very rewarding for experienced, skilled climbers. If you’re after a gentler hike with great views, visit the Belvedere Lookout or Magic Mountain instead.

For clear views of Mt. Rotui from other parts of Moorea, early morning is usually best, before clouds gather and obscure the peak. However, on clear days—especially in the dry season—it’s possible to have good views at any time of day. If you want to climb the mountain, don’t go after it rains, when the already-challenging trail can get very slippery. French Polynesia’s rainy season is from November to April.

There are several places around Moorea where you can get great views of Mt. Rotui, from different angles. The Belvedere Lookout, Three Pines Lookout, and Magic Mountain offer great views from a high vantage point. For good views from a lower angle, take a boat tour in Cook’s Bay or Opunohu Bay, or check out the Ōfa'i Tere viewpoint in Opunohu Bay, where there are information panels.
