Fabulous experience. Even though the coach trip was long, it was extremely scenic and interesting. Cruising the Milford sound was spectacular and the flight back was one of the best things we have ever done. Awesome day.
Great trip. Great company. Stan the Tour Guide/bus driver very knowledgeable, great sense of humour. We where to bus, boat and fly back from Milford, but weather conditions where not good. Great communication with what was happening. Was being refunded without question. Would definitely do it again, with the same company. Brilliant day.
Viator is a third party company that coordinated tours into a package using two separate companies. Our friend booked a similar experience through viator for the same day/time but her sub-companies were different than ours— we should have booked on the same exact itinerary to travel together. Unfortunately we were informed only after entering the first stage of our 3 part excursion that the last part was cancelled. Visitor did end up refunding us for that portion after request, but the communication was poor. I would recommend booking directly through local companies to avoid the hassle and miscommunication!
Souther Adventures in Queenstown was the company through which the first two parts were booked— a coach/bus ride and tour into Milford Sound and then a cruise through Milford sound. The bus ride wasn’t super great— the guide wasn’t extremely knowledgeable, although she was nice and the driver was great. It would have been nicer to hire a car and drive it ourselves. The cruise however was incredible— mainly because Charlotte l, the tour guide, was incredibly knowledgeable and fun. I would give Souther Adventures guide Charlotte on the cruise five stars!
Great time. One clitch said we'd have our own window seat on the plane vack. That was not the case...
Flight maybe, in fact probably will be canceled due to weather, so don't plan on being back before 7 pm.
We booked the coach drive over and fly back. The weather was perfect blue skies and all of the passengers we were with that booked flights had a pilot waiting on them. We had no pilot and they didn’t even notify us or the coach driver. We had to hunt them down and they just said “we aren’t flying today “. No explanation. So we had to take the miserable 4 hour drive back. They gave us a partial refund but since we didn’t get what we paid for and expected we believe they should refund in total.
Neither Viator, Southern Discoveries or Milford Air were willing to take any responsibility. We believe the plane didn’t fly because they didn’t have enough passengers and therefore chose to abandon us. The weather had zero to do with it. Buyer Beware.
This was my first bad experience with Viator. I had booked a “coach, cruise, fly” from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back. I waited for a confirmation (as per instructions) via email and was saddened to know that it was cancelled. But not to be discouraged, I tried again and I thought the 2nd time was a charm, I got in. Email confirmation and all. As the date got closer, I got my email reminder that I was going to get charged. I got charged on my credit card, and I knew for sure, this was all a go. When we got their at 6:30am, the Southern Discoveries meeting point, wide-eyed and ready to go, our eagerness was shot down when we were told that we were not on the roster. I told them the story what had happened, showed both bookings (cancelled and confirmed)
The saving grace was the people at Southern Discoveries, most especially our bus driver, Sonia, who was so accommodating. She put us up on her bus and took it upon herself to book us on another airline (Glenorchy Air) when Air Milford was already booked. A great driver at that and an amazing tour guide.
The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound (through Te Anau) was so beautiful and then when you enter the Fiordland National Park, it turns magical.
The buffet on the Milford Sound cruise was decent (a mix of western and eastern). Did not expect the waters to be choppy but it was, but not too bad.
The highlight of the trip was the flight from Milford Sound to Queenstown. One word: breathtaking. Worth the money, you get a better perspective and appreciation of the Sound. Just nonstop oohs and aahs (wow moments) throughout the whole short 45-minute trip back. Thank you to the young pilot (whose name I forget) and his co-pilot for a job we’ll done.
This honestly would have been a 1-star rating if not for the quick credit for the “fly” leg that was credited back to my account.
I always believe, that if I don’t have any good thing to say, I’d rather not say it. But I feel I needed to be heard. I would not want this to happen again to some couple who visit a country for the first time, pay a decent amount for the service, only to be told that they were not on the list.
That said, everyone has to experience this beautiful trip.
The Cruise on Milford Sound is not to be missed but we were unable to take the flight back due to changing weather &, as yet, have not received a refund of the flight portion after 8 days.
The coach driver was superb! Too bad we couldnt fly back as planned. Not sure of reason. Weather improved greatly in afternoon. Refund for flight return was same day! Coach driver did a great job on four hour trip back to Queenstown.
Very Helpful Staff in Queenstown and Milford Sound and up-to-date Coach travel to the Sound. Third party cancelled flyback out of their control, they processed very fast refund even before return to Queenstown.
