This riding experience provides visitors with a first-hand taste of the wild landscape around Banff, much as the early settlers would have seen it, while mounted on horseback.

If you choose to cover the Bow River area, head to the natural sulfur hot springs. Follow the trail, which loops around a marsh near the Bow River. As you ride, catch views of Mt. Norquay and the Cascade Mountain in the distance.

We absolutely loved our 1 hour Bow River Trail ride. The views were fantastic and the horses were very gentle and mild. Our guide Crystal was the excellent. She was very kind and genuine, and loves her job and the horses. She pointed out so many interesting sights, including two separate small groups of elk. She shared a lot of history or the area as well as the horse ranch. We would highly recommend Banff Trail Riders and ask for Crystal!

Great trail ride with excellent guides that share information about the area and the stables. Horses were great for beginners and those that have not ridden before.

A definite must!

Be prepared for dust and d dirt flying in the wind. We saw a adolescent black bear on our ride. It was cool.

Disappointed

Kyle_P, Jul 2026
Not a good experience at all. The customer service here needs some help. The horses and the stables are beautiful but they need to get their restrictions to ride out more boldly before you pay $250.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Thank you for your feedback and for your kind comments about our horses and stables. We’re sorry the experience and customer service did not meet your expectations. Our participation restrictions are in place for the wellbeing of both guests and horses. They are included on our product pages, within the booking terms at checkout, and in our information emails. We understand that important details can still be missed, and we are always looking for ways to make these requirements even clearer throughout the booking process.

Amazing Trail Ride, but Better Coaching for Beginners Is Needed

Masume_A, Jul 2026
We had a wonderful time overall, and I’m very glad we chose this place for our horseback riding experience. The horses were beautiful, the scenery was amazing, and it was a memorable experience for our group. My own experience was excellent. This wasn’t my first time horseback riding, and I felt comfortable throughout the ride. When we were getting off the horses, I mentioned that one of my knees was a bit locked and I was having trouble maneuvering. The coach was very understanding and immediately asked another staff member to come over and help me, which I really appreciated. However, one member of our group, who was riding a horse for the first time, had a disappointing experience with the same coach that I think is worth mentioning because it could help improve the experience for future beginners. As a beginner, she expected clear, patient instruction. While we were getting off the horses, the coach repeatedly told her to “sit up.” Unfortunately, there was a communication misunderstanding, and she interpreted the instruction as simply straightening her back, which she did. The coach repeated the instruction several times, sounding increasingly frustrated, but didn’t explain what she meant until afterward. Only then did she explain that the horse was urinating and that my friend’s position was putting pressure on its back. My friend felt terrible because she genuinely cares about animals and would never intentionally make a horse uncomfortable. A brief explanation the first time would have prevented the misunderstanding. As someone riding for the first time, it wasn’t obvious that the horse beneath her was urinating, especially with several horses standing close together. Later, while she was trying to stop the horse, she was being cautious because she didn’t want to hurt the horse. Instead of calmly demonstrating the correct technique, the coach abruptly took the reins from her hands and told her she was hurting the horse. She grabbed them forcefully enough that, had my friend been holding them more tightly, she could have ended up with rope burns. We completely understand that the horses’ welfare must always come first, and we appreciate that riders need to be corrected when they’re doing something wrong. However, first-time riders also need patient instruction, clear explanations, and an understanding that they may not be familiar with equestrian terminology or know why a particular instruction is important. A calm explanation would have corrected the issue immediately while also making a beginner feel supported instead of discouraged. Overall, we genuinely enjoyed our visit and would still recommend this place. My own experience was excellent, and everyone else in our group also had a great time. I’m sharing this feedback simply because I hope future beginners receive the same level of patience and support that would help them leave feeling confident, encouraged, and excited to ride again.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share such thoughtful and constructive feedback. We’re delighted that your group enjoyed the beautiful horses, scenery, and overall experience, and that our team responded quickly when you needed assistance with your knee. We’re sorry your friend’s first riding experience left her feeling discouraged. Instructions sometimes need to be given promptly when a horse’s comfort or control is involved, and a staff member may need to take the reins to assist. However, directions should always be communicated calmly and clearly, especially for first time riders who may not understand the terminology or reason behind them. A brief explanation could have prevented this misunderstanding and helped your friend feel supported. We will review your comments with our team as we continue working to provide beginners with patient and encouraging guidance. Thank you for still recommending us.

Enjoy the ride

Well run operation with beautiful horses. Got there early and got to look at the horses before riding. Hundreds of them. Staff was excellent!

Great kid friendly ride!

Laura_G, Jul 2026
A very leisurely ride perfect for families! The horses were all very mild and well suited for our kids first ride ever (kids ages 8 and 9). The guides were very friendly, accommodating, and informative! Trail ride was mostly along a shaded woodland path and not as many views as I'd expected, but still some breathtaking moments. Bring bug spray!

Scammers

Brian_H, Jun 2026
I booked a 1 hour horseback riding slot for $230 on 06/26/2026. I arrived five minutes before the scheduled time only to be told I was too late to join. There was nothing in the emails stating that I needed to be half an hour early. The only mention of that was in a small fine print on the downloadable tickets. They told me they could not refund or reschedule and I had to fly home to Toronto that night. The people I spoke with both in-person and over the phone were telling me different alibis which tells me they could have helped me get a refund/reschedule but chose not to. An absolute waste of experience and I would never recommend to anybody.

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear how disappointing this experience was, especially as it was part of your trip before flying home. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer refunds or reschedule rides when guests arrive after the required check-in time. The 30-minute early check-in requirement is communicated in the booking confirmation, website and ticket, as all riders must complete waivers, be fitted with helmets, and attend the mandatory safety briefing before the group departs. We understand this was frustrating, and we're sorry we weren't able to provide the outcome you were hoping for. We appreciate your feedback and will continue looking for ways to make our check-in requirements even more visible during the booking process.

I would like to give 0 rating to stables 100 sundace road , i know we were just 5 mi late for ride at 4 oclock 24 june, they didnt even hear and ignored us worst experience ever with this stables. I called tham and told to arrange for ride to next day they asked for payment ridiculous experience , i will go to banff tourist department and file a legal steps towards stables .

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear you were disappointed with your experience. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate late arrivals. The 30-minute early check-in is necessary for waivers, helmet fitting, horse assignments, and the mandatory safety briefing before the ride departs. Once the safety briefing has started we cannot get guest on the tour. We also offered the option to rebook for the following day at the standard rate, as our late arrival policy does not allow for complimentary rescheduling or refunds. We understand this was frustrating, especially if you had been looking forward to the ride, and we're sorry we couldn't provide the outcome you were hoping for. We appreciate your feedback and wish you all the best.

People and horses was nice. But could have been better with pics and scenery. Basic ride thru most of it. Would have been great to stop and admire the more picturesque spots..

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Thank you for your feedback! We're glad you enjoyed our horses and staff. Our rides are designed to provide an authentic horseback experience through the forests and trails of Banff National Park, with a few scenic viewpoints along the route. If you're looking for more stops and mountain vistas, we recommend one of our longer rides. We appreciate your comments and hope to welcome you back!

Well Run

Christina_M, Jun 2026
The trail ride was very informative and extremely well operated. It was very safe and thoughtfully planned, and, of course, lots of fun.

Enjoyable

Patricia_C, Jun 2026
Very enjoyable ride. The guides and staff very knowledgeable and well trained. Horses were gentle and knew the trail well.

Great time

Jacqueline_P, Jun 2026
Great time. Both of us were seniors and havent ridden a horse in 40 yrs. Horses were great and the views were beautiful

“Experience” ruined

Tyler_H, Jun 2026
There was no experience. Because of your company’s poor communication, my wife and I weren’t able to actually partake in the excursion…on our 5-year anniversary no less.

Response from Host, Jul 2026

We're very sorry to hear this, especially as it was meant to be part of your 5-year anniversary celebration. Based on your review alone, we're unable to identify what happened. We'd appreciate the opportunity to look into it. Please contact our customer support team with your booking details, and we'll be happy to review the situation and follow up with you directly.

Linda_Z, Jun 2026
Wonderful views! Only recommendation is for them to cut the branches more because so many times we had to duck down or to the side. Even got scratches on my leg. Recommend wearing thicker pants and def long pants/long sleeves

Not a good venue

Patrick_G, Jun 2026
Showed up and was told I was too heavy to ride. Booked online and did not see anything about weight limit. Really frustrating. No money back and the folks at the barn just kept saying that the weight limit was clearly evident online and it was not

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry you were disappointed. For the safety and welfare of both our guests and our horses, all riders must meet our weight requirements. This information is displayed on the tour page before booking, in the important information section, and in the confirmation materials. We're sorry we weren't able to accommodate you on the day and understand how frustrating this must have been.

We had such a lovely time...

Hilary_P, Jun 2026
We had such a lovely time on the bow river ride! Despite the recent flooding blocking some of the trail, the ride was skilfully diverted through some other lovely countryside. The staff were all wonderful, helpful and informative and made our experience so memorable. Sam in particular was so lovely and we had a great chat, it was so surprising that it was only her first day on the job! My only feedback would be that communication through the viatour platform didn’t seem to work and the links in the email were broken.

Stunning views. Easy to learn. Friendly and helpful staff!

Aimee_E, Jun 2026
No backpacks allowed. Boot with a heel would have been helpful. Great way to see the stunning scenery. Staff is very helpful. Great opportunity for beginners.

Fun Ride

joseph_b, May 2026
Very easy way to see the great scenery. Even if never been on a horse this is a great trail ride. Just do it

Great fun!

Anonymous, May 2026
Well run. Guide Lauren spoke several languages and well‼️. Horses are exceptionally clean and well kept, as are the stable grounds. It’s a gorgeous saunter through woods and mountains and lakes at a walk pace; no trot or canter (I.e., may not satisfy serious equestrians but is appropriate and excellent for a tourists’ trail ride. Not flexible at all on reservations but they do have a business to run. And they do an excellent job. Highly recommend.

Awesome for me - not so good for the young lady behind me

Liana_C, May 2026
This was a highlight of my visit to Banff National Park! The trail through the tall spruce trees and along the river bank was EXACTLY what I had been wishing for!! The price, the time on Tucker and the views were perfect. The only thing that saddened me was that the young lady behind me was on a more spirited horse and she was getting increasingly anxious - which Rumour was sensing. Staff member Naomi who was at the back of our group had little to no sympathy. In the last 10 minutes of the ride, I was keeping Rumour and his rider calm. She ended the ride in tears. This shouldn’t have happened.

So chilled

Tessad_L, May 2026
Great experience no previous horse riding knowledge needed. Relaxing time would totally recommend to everyone

Mo_Z, May 2026
We had a GREAT time with the trail riders! They made the experience seemless and fun. Our guides holly and Bailey were very knowledgeable and kept it fun and easy going. Our horses were so calm and friendly. Def recommend this if you’re looking for something calm to do while in Banff. Next time we’ll try doing the 2 hour tour! Thank you again!

If you may be late, don't bother!

George_V, Apr 2026
Bucketlist gone wrong! I brought my daughter for a once in a lifetime experience however, we were a little late (still before the stated departure) and were advised of the policy and had to turn back to Calgary. So sad! No refund either.

Response from Host, May 2026

Im sorry you missed your ride. We do disclose and send you multiple reminders to be on time as we can not wait for late riders. It is unfair to everyone else that turns up on time.
