Top Rotorua Musicals in 2026

After a sold-out debut, Tērā te Auahi: A stage show of the Mt Tarawera eruption returns to Rotorua for a special summer season, from 15 January to 14 February 2027. Created by performing arts collective Te Whare Tapere o Te Arawa, this contemporary production combines theatre, music, movement and kapa haka to tell the story of the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption, bringing one of Aotearoa's most significant historical events vividly to life through the experiences of those who lived through it. Tērā te Auahi explores the interconnected stories of the people of Te Wairoa and surrounding villages, and the enduring spirit of the land itself. Through powerful performance, Te Whare Tapere o Te Arawa illuminates themes of loss, survival and resilience. Its June 2026 premiere sold out all seven performances to almost 6,000 people and drew standing ovations. REVIEWS 'As good as anything I've seen on stage in the world. The talent is overwhelming.' Cliff Curtis, internationally acclaimed actor.
