What are people saying about Oaxaca

We had a great time...
We had a great time painting our alebrijes. I went with my husband and 9-year old son. Cesar picked us up from town and drove us out to their workshop. His English was good and he was interesting to chat with on the ride to and fro. He translated for Armando as he explained the history and design of the alebrijes that he carves, and then we got to pick an alebrije to paint. We all really enjoyed it and our pieces turned out great!

Monte Alban ruins
Bring water, wear sturdy shoes and bring a hat. It can be quite hot although we had comfortable weather. There is a ruin you can climb up on to see an amazing view but it’s steep and uneven. There’s a rail on one side which can provide some security. This is an incredible site but you need a guide to explain the history. I suggest visiting the museum of cultural events at the temple de Santo Domingo in Oaxaca either before or after because of the discovery of tomb #7 which was filled with incredible artifacts.
Our guide, Miguel, was very knowledgeable and informative. Answered all our questions and some. Great tour experience.

This was an outstanding...
This was an outstanding experience. Armando was our guide and he was fantastic! Having the private tour and ability to customize what you do/don't want to see to optimize your time is so worth it. Having done a big group tour in CDMX a few days before this...the private tour was soooo much better. You can go at your own pace and not feel like you're wasting any time. If I'm ever back in Oaxaca, I would 100% book another tour with this group. Nice car, great flexibility, and well chosen stops at each location. Seeing the surrounding small towns and meeting multi-generation families that are preserving their local craft is what makes visiting Oaxaca feel so special.
One thing to know in advance is not all stops shown on the website are possible to do in one day. Certain stops are geographically too far apart, and the stops essentially split up into two regions you can choose from (south vs east). So for example we were able to do everything we wanted to do in the southern region (Monte Alban, San Martin Tilcajete, San Bartolo Coyotepec, etc), but would have had to do a second day of touring to see what we wanted in the eastern region (Mitla, Hierve el Agua, Tule Tree, Teotitlan del Valle). The two Mezcal options are so there is one per region (south: Santa Catarina Minas; east: Santiago Matatlan). So it's customizable within limits based on which of the two regions you want to dedicate your day to (Monte Alban could go into either since it's close to the city). If I had realized this in advance, I still would have booked this tour, but would have booked/allocated two days with them instead of one.

Great experience with...
Great experience with Fernando! Ahead of the pick up he was communicative via I text and even arrived early for our pick up for the half day tour. Fernando’s English was excellent and gave us an in-depth tour of Monte Alban and answered all the many questions we had about the site and more. I’d definitely recommend him for future tours. Also, remember to wear sunscreen!

Exceptional service
We had four other different guides during our stay in Oaxaca and they were all decent, but Fernando with Tours Privados Oaxaca routes was the best. He took us all over and moved swiftly to make sure we had the best experience. Super accommodating and communicates very well. Don’t hesitate.. this is your guy, and will be for us every time we come back to Oaxaca.

Huatulco Airport R/T trsnsfer
Our airport/resort RT transportation was done with Lamby Tours. They are phenomenal. Neftalí picked us up upon arrival and given this was our first time in Huatulco, gave us a wonderful overview of this beautiful Southern Pacific coastal town. He also drove us back to the airport at the end of our trip. He was professional, has a kind demeanor, and made us feel fantastic during our time here. We enjoyed our transportation experience so much with Lamby Tours that we also booked three additional activities with them that were all amazing. We can't wait to return to Huatulco.

Highly recommend
It was an amazing experience from pickup to drop-off. As two women traveling alone, my mother and I felt completely safe the entire time. Willy and Carlos were incredible tour guides who treated us like family from the moment we met them.
If you’re looking to experience Mexico’s countryside in the most authentic way possible, I highly recommend this tour. These two gentlemen went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable. Not once did we feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or anything less than welcomed.
Thank you, Willy and Carlos, for your kindness, professionalism, and hospitality. You truly made this trip special. 🇲🇽❤️

Crash Course in Oaxaca’s History, Culture, Food, and Social Movements
We took Diego’s walking tour on our very first day in Oaxaca, running on little sleep after an early flight, and it ended up being the perfect introduction to the city.
Starting in the Zócalo, where a large teachers’ protest was taking place, Diego did an excellent job explaining not only the history of Oaxaca but also the different perspectives surrounding the protest. Rather than offering a one-sided narrative, he thoughtfully explained both the benefits and challenges of the movement, helping us better understand the city, its people, and its politics.
From there, we explored many of Oaxaca’s most iconic sites, including the Cathedral, Teatro Macedonio Alcalá, Andador de Macedonio Alcalá, Centro Cultural San Pablo, Iglesia del Carmen Alto, Mercado Benito Juárez, and Mercado 20 de Noviembre. Navigating the city center and the maze of protest tents would have been intimidating on our own, but Diego guided us through it with ease.
One of the highlights was learning about Oaxaca's vibrant street culture. Diego explained the meaning behind the murals, protest posters, stickers, and graffiti that cover many of the city's walls. What initially looked like random street art became a fascinating window into Oaxaca's history, social movements, and community identity.
The markets were another standout. Diego introduced us to local vendors, explained the significance of many regional foods and products, and even helped us order fresh juice and a traditional Oaxacan breakfast when we were absolutely starving from our flight. That small gesture made us feel less like tourists and more like welcomed guests.
To top it all off, we finished at a fantastic local coffee shop, the perfect ending to a morning packed with history, culture, food, and local insight.
By the end of the tour, we felt oriented, informed, caffeinated, and genuinely connected to Oaxaca. If you're visiting the city, especially for the first time, I can't imagine a better way to begin your trip than spending a few hours exploring it with Diego.

Fantastic Experience for Vegetarians
This is a brilliant way to learn how to cook a traditional Oaxacan meal with a vegetarian twist. Victor made us feel included, and happily shared his knowledge -: from going to the local market to select ingredients, to making and eating a wonderful meal including mole, rice, guacamole, tortillas, empanadas and fruit. Drinks included traditional chocolate, mezcal and Jamaica juice. Highly recommended.

10/10 tour!
This was an exceptional tour! My friend and I were the only people who booked on so we ended up getting a private tour (we were very impressed that they didn’t cancel!) Francisco was an incredible and very attentive guide! He answered all of our questions, offered to adapt the tour to best suit our preferences and gave us time to explore each of the workshops ourselves. We really appreciated the time he spent in the market with us highlighting different local foods - my friend loved the enchilada he recommended! All of the workshops we visited were amazing, and we were grateful to all of the artisans for sharing their skills and expertise with us. We’re backpacking for a few months with limited bag space/budget so we took the tour to learn more about the local artistic traditions rather than to buy souvenirs from the workshops (as much as we would have loved to!). We were initially a little nervous when we were the only two who showed up that we might seem rude if we didn’t make purchases, but we needn’t have worried as there was absolutely no pressure to buy from any of the workshops. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone!

Don’t Miss this Culinary Odyssey!
I truly found this food tour was excellent! Perhaps the best of this type I ever participated in. Papi was terrific - knowledgeable, interesting accessible and patient. He brought me to many wonderful food stations and I sampled a wide variety of delicious Mexican food. He also shared important information about the history, culture and trends in Oaxaca throughout our time together. I highly recommend him and this tour to all travelers seeking Oaxaca culinary experiences (and much more…)
