Top Bath How to Get Around in 2026

Wells is England's smallest city, but it packs in more than a millennium of history, intrigue, and quirky traditions. On this self-guided audio tour, you'll pass all the city’s main sights and hear the most colourful stories attached to each. The tour starts at the Wells Tourist Office on the Market Place, where stallholders have been trading since the 12th century. You’ll see the Bishop's Palace and meet the swans who live on the moat and are trained to ring a bell when they want food. You'll then pass picturesque spots linked to Wells Cathedral, such as Penniless Porch and Cathedral Green, stopping outside the magnificent West Front to hear its story. Finally, you’ll make your way back to the Market Place, hearing tales of three periods in the history of Wells, from the drama of the Civil War and the bloody Monmouth Rebellion to the over-zealous May-day merrymaking in the 1600s.

Wells is a city where beauty and darkness have always coexisted. On this self-guided audio tour, you’ll explore the city’s ghostly history through the eyes of Walpurga the Wells Witch, hearing about murders, plagues, and restless spirits lurking behind medieval facades. The tour starts at St. Cuthbert’s Church, where marble memorials honour the Tudway family – slave traders who bought respectability from the profits of their Caribbean plantations. You’ll pass a building where executions took place, visit the City Arms pub – a former jail where paranormal investigators recorded off-the-scale spirit activity – and walk streets whose very names hint at dark histories. The tour ends at the Bishop’s Palace moat, where the ghosts of Bishop Richard Kidder and his wife – crushed in their bed when chimney stacks collapsed during the Great Storm of 1703 – are still seen on the battlements.
