This was a great tour. The train street was just a small, but cool and unique, part of the tour. Having someone take us through the old quarter and explain the history was awesome. Thom was a great guide and I would highly recommend the tour.

“William” our tour guide had 1 job: to take us to Train Street to experience the passing of the train while having a drink at a track side cafe. After taking us on an hour and half walking tour of the Old Quarter, the Lake, Church and Markets, we arrived 5 minute late to Train Street and only had a fleeting view of the train as it disappeared on its journey to the cafe area.
We then went to the cafe, had a couple of free beers by way if compensation and took several photos of the area after the event.
Oh, and it was advertised to include a food tour, thinking we’d be tasting food on the tour. But No.
Waste of time and money!

Dear Peter,
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations.
We would like to clarify a few points regarding this tour:
Tour itinerary and meeting point
This experience is designed as a walking tour combining highlights of Hanoi Old Quarter with the Train Street visit. The itinerary clearly includes walking through the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake area, church, and local streets before arriving at Train Street. The meeting point is also stated in advance in the booking details.
Train Street experience
Our guide’s main responsibility is not only to escort guests to Train Street, but also to provide a guided walking experience around Hanoi before the train viewing. On this day, due to timing factors and walking pace, the group arrived shortly after the train had passed. We understand this was disappointing, especially if seeing the train pass was your main priority.
To make up for this inconvenience, our guide arranged complimentary beers for your group in addition to the included drink at the Train Street café.
Food inclusion
The tour includes one complimentary drink per guest at the Train Street café. This is stated clearly in the itinerary. This is not a street food tasting tour, despite the tour including walking through food and market areas.
We appreciate your comments, as they help us improve communication and guest expectations. We will review how we explain the itinerary at the start of the tour to ensure guests understand the walking route, inclusions, and timing for the train schedule more clearly.
Thank you again for your feedback.
Best regards,
Rose

This tour was epic! William was amazing. On top of going to train street, he took me to all the tourist and community locations in Hanoi. Loved every bit of it.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and had no problem moving the time to be more accommodating to us! He made sure to address all our concerns and even treated us to drinks afterwards.

Tom was amazing as tour guide, he explained everything in detail and was chill person. He came on time and was ok with everything we requested. The service from viator was top notch.

This was very interesting, walking to all the major old city sites. Friendly and professional guide. Provided great fun conversation. Arrived on time to see a train pass by on train street. Very well planned

This tour was fantastic. I was picked up by Tom and as it was just me, I jumped on the back of his moped. He drove me around a lots of sites, pointing out different important building and stopping for photos. We went to a cafe on train s treet, had an egg coffee watching the train come by. As a solo female I felt very safe. Although the bikes and traffic do look scary, it was fantastic to be part of the organised? chaos. Highly recommend. Thank you Tom.

Tour with Halu was fun, enjoyable, and very safe. (My friends have experienced strangers arguing and pushing them because those strangers had tried to stand in front of them at the last minute when the train arrives even though my friends have been waiting for 45 min.)
I did not have to experience any such problems with Halu as our guide. Only the positives. Additional bonus with Halu. He gave restaurant recommendations. Went to one of them afterwards and it was a super tasty meal. Will do his next recommendation tomorrow as he marked it on our Google map.
Halu really stands out as an all around terrific guide! It's how he does both the little things as well as the big things in the two hours to accommodate our requests.

We really enjoyed our tour to Train Street and walk around Hanoi old town. Our guide was great - good English speaker, knowledgeable, personable.

This is what travellers should know, it was all about our tour guide. Note we had only arrived in Hanoi for the first time that morning at 0630 and our tour was at 1400 the same day. Our tour guides name as he said was 'Tom' and we meet him at the meeting point: Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre at 1400 Mon 16 Feb 26. He said when he arrived at the meeting point, noting we arrived early, that he needed to wait for another group. We waited, they didn't show up so instead of moving on with the 2hr tour ie: with supposedly a lot to see and do, we walked supposedly to their place, he called them, they didn't answer so I said, 'we are at their place go knock on their door and find out what's happening.' He said no I will call them again then he said he will take us to 'a big street market', which he did but we stood their whilst he negotiated with taxi drivers??!! It's now going on over an hour of a 2 hour tour so then all of a sudden, a taxi driver rolls up and said for us the get in as he is taking us to the Hanoi Street train. As we started to leave, we moved past 'Tom' so I said to him what's going on and he said you are going to the see the train, I will get this group and meet you there! We are new in the country hence the MAIN highlight whilst in Hanoi, was going to experience Train Street, we arrived got out of the taxi not knowing what to do, we walked up to the train tracks as they were just closing the boom gates, heaps of people there, I asked the attendant that we wanted to sit next to the tracks the person said quite bluntly - 'No' so we stood behind boom gates about 2mtrs from the train which we can do in our homeland and the train went by, not an experience! Tom our 'so called' tour guide in the end didn't turn up so we walked back to our hotel approx. 40mins from the Street Train. Later, he sent me a text saying he couldn't make it as he was caught up with the other group, very suspect and unprofessional. We definitely didn't get 'Value for Money' and were ripped off of the money we paid for the tour. Tom was unprofessional and wasn't honest and up front about his actions with us throughout our tour. My advice, check and ask the name of your tour guide and if it is 'Tom' give him a wide berth!

Dear Peter James,
Thank you again for your detailed feedback regarding your tour in Hanoi on 16 Feb 2026.
First of all, we sincerely apologize that the experience did not fully meet your expectations. We truly regret that the coordination and conclusion of the tour left you feeling disappointed.
For transparency to future guests, we would like to clarify the timeline of that afternoon.
Your tour was confirmed to begin at 14:00. After meeting your family, our guide walked to another hotel at approximately 14:15 to collect the second group of three guests. Unfortunately, they had mistakenly recorded their meeting time as 16:15 instead of 14:15. When our guide arrived, they were not present.
To avoid wasting your time, the guide continued walking with you and explored parts of the Old Quarter while attempting to contact them. The plan was for both groups to regroup at 14:45 in front of Dong Xuan Market. However, the second group arrived late again.
As the train was scheduled to pass Train Street at approximately 15:15 — and access is strictly controlled and time-sensitive — Tom made the decision to arrange a taxi immediately to ensure you would not miss this highlight. He remained behind temporarily to wait for the other three guests and planned to join you shortly after.
During the walking portion of the tour, Tom also personally purchased two beers for you and a chocolate ice cream for your daughter as a gesture of hospitality. He additionally covered the taxi cost to ensure you could reach Train Street on time. These were small gestures intended to make your experience more enjoyable despite the time pressure that afternoon.
We would also like to share that 16 Feb 2026 was the final day before Tet (Vietnamese Traditional New Year), the most important holiday in Vietnam. Around 95% of travel companies close during this period as families prepare to welcome the New Year the following day. Despite these challenges, we were very pleased to operate the tour and welcome both your family (3 guests) and the second group (3 guests) so that you could experience Hanoi during this special time of year.
That said, regardless of holiday circumstances or other guests’ delays, your experience should have felt smooth, well-coordinated, and professionally concluded. We sincerely acknowledge that the execution did not meet that standard.
We also genuinely appreciate the kind message you later shared with Tom, which we include here for full context:
"Hi Tom, thank you for the time we were with you. You are a lovely person, a knowledgeable guide and friendly. It's a pity the tour ended that way as it would have been lovely at the end of the tour, after the Ha Noi Train Street experience, to buy you a drink and say goodbye in person. Thank you for showing us your Ha Noi and we wish you all the best for 2026! Cheers!"
We value both your compliments and your constructive feedback. Your comments help us improve our coordination procedures, especially during peak holiday periods such as Tet.
Thank you again for visiting Hanoi, and we truly wish you and your family many wonderful journeys ahead.
Kind regards,
Rose

Our guide Halu walked us to train street and we all waited for the train to pass. On the way back he gave us a guided walking tour and then took us to a local coffee shop to experience three different types of delicious coffee. A great experience.

Expect a walk around town, and tidbits of information after the train street experience. Train street is an experience one should enjoy at least once while in Hanoi.
Gary_W, Aug 2025
Great street train experience in fact two trains within 10 minutes, then walking thru old Hanoi alleys and markets. It was raining but loved it. The wet market and smells was also a highlight
Jordon_F, Jul 2025
Tom was very knowledgeable and we had an amazing time, couldn’t believe how close the train gets. Would recommend

My girlfriend and I just explored Hanoi's iconic Train Street with Thomson's tour guide excursion and it was an absolute highlight of our trip! Our guide was super knowledgeable and fun, sharing fascinating insights into the local culture and history. We loved the adrenaline rush of dodging trains and sampling delicious street food. The whole experience was seamless and enjoyable, thanks to Thomson's expert planning. If you're visiting Hanoi, we highly recommend this tour - it's a must-do for any couple or traveler looking for a unique adventure!

Thomas came to pick me up and it was raining alot. He had a raincoat handy. We drove around on his bike to all the well known places before going to train street. It was a great experience
Trevor_T, Jun 2025
Our guide William was excellent, his knowledge and explanations were complete in every detail. The visit to local night market in the villages are awesome and not seen without local knowledge. We were shown true Vietnam life, the experience will stay wth us forever.

Perfect walk about with Einstein. We covered a lot of Hanoi that we would have never seen and saw the great Train Street.
Donna_R, Mar 2025
Had the best time with Cuong! He took me all around Hanoi and even helped me with a special gift for my daughter
Deb_C, Mar 2025
It is on a motorbike which is super fun. Cuong the tour guide knowledgeable and took care of every detail. Perfect viewing of the train, great pictures, it could not have been better. This is a must see and must do in Hanoi. Don't miss it or try to do yourself as very crowded and hard to get a table.
Sara_H, Feb 2025
Tom picked us up from the hotel, walked us around and introduced us to a couple local foods. Tom was absolutely superb!! He was so warm, friendly and knowledgeable about Vietnam and all the buildings we walked by. We finished the tour on train street where we sat at a cafe and had beer and coffee. The train was one of the coolest things we did on this side of country. Would highly recommend this tour and especially Tom.
Scott_a, Feb 2025
This is a definite must do for anyone going to Hanoi. Tom was an awesome guide who went way above and beyond to let us experience the Old Quarter and to get a feeling for this amazing city. The Train Street experience is something to behold. It cannot be missed. Plus, such good value.
DianeNicole_S, Feb 2025
Tom was knowledgeable. Its a learning experience for us. The tour was not just about the Hanoi train street but also about the Old Quarter and Vietnam's history.

My guide was Tom and he treated me like family as he drove me around town and eventually ended up in the train street. He was a perfect example of vietnamese hospitality.

Having just arrived in Hanoi, this experience provided the perfect introduction to the city. Chris was a great personal guide - very knowledgeable, chatty and passionate about Hanoi and Vietnam, pointing out places and things of interest along the way. He ensured we had the perfect spot to have a drink and watch the train. Afterwards we were guided safely back to our hotel.
