Itinerary

Meet your professional driver and guide with morning pickup at your Heraklion hotel, and climb into a rugged Land Rover Defender for the trip outside of town into the beautiful Cretan mountains. While the island receives over 300 days of sunshine every year, in wintertime these peaks receive a sprinkling of white snow, adding a striking contrast to the landscape. Follow a historic Minoan route, learning about the history of the island and this ancient civilization along the way.

Stop at landmarks including a reservoir, the remains of an Roman aqueduct, and villages in the foothills of the Afendi Mountains. Brush up on your Greek legends with an optional visit to Dikteon Cave, the mythological birthplace of Zeus (small entrance fee extra, study shoes recommended). Continue on to the Lassithi Plateau, an agricultural community relatively untouched by time, to watch locals at work picking olives, harvesting potatoes, and making wine and raki brandy using traditional methods. You may even have a chance to try your hand at these tasks.

Taste typical Cretan fare at a local tavern, where you can choose from traditional and vegetarian starters and main courses, served with wine. After recharging, stop in the village of Krassi for a look at its natural spring water source and 2,000-year-old plane tree before the scenic return drive to your hotel.
