What are people saying about Crete

Beautiful hike
The hike is around 10 miles mostly downhill so it’s not too strenuous, but it’s still a long way and you should be in reasonably good physical condition to make this hike. It does get kind of crowded, and I kept getting passed by people who seemed to be in a hurry. I recommend you slow down and take the sites along the way because it is a very beautiful hike. The trail is rough enough that you have to watch where you’re going while you hike so it’s difficult to sightsee and walk at the same time. If you hurry through the gorge, you’ll get to the end and then wonder why you came all that way, but if you take your time and stop on the ground and take some pictures, you will have a wonderful time. They start you early in the morning and you need to finish by 4:30 or five in order to catch the 530 ferry back to the road system. That is not difficult to do. I finished at three because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t cutting it close and I wish I would have slowed down even a little bit more and tried to finish about four. That would still give plenty of time to take a nice dip at the beach before getting on the boat.

100% Must Do Class!!
This class was truly incredible! My husband and I have taken 3 or 4 cooking classes while traveling, but this one was really special. The hosts, the food, the animals, the scenery, literally everything—was unforgettable. I couldn’t recommend it enough!

One thing off my bucket list
Go in the spring- beautiful and perfect temperature and river not dried up
Hire walking poles as it is difficult terrain and they make a huge difference - gives you 4 legs like one of the goats
Carry one bottle of water and refill from the springs and river as totally clean and fresh
Only make short rest stops and eat small snacks - don’t do a long picnic break as your muscles won’t want to get going again and you don’t want to feel full.
Make sure you have plenty of battery in your phone, or 2 phones as you take so many photos it uses your battery fast
Take a hat
If you are struggling at the end, after you have walked 1km on exit there is a minibus that is 3€ that will take you to the village saving you 2km walk.
The Kri Kri bar/restaurant is lovely- family run and we had a lovely late lunch/early dinner there, and sat drinking beer till we went for the ferry.
Sarah was an amazing guide, really informative and stayed at the rear helping stragglers.
Be aware it is the hardest walk I have ever done. I have walked far further than that, I walk every day, but this was hard because of the terrain. I did fall once because the rocks move- you need to be vigilant. Stop to admire the scenery, don’t walk and admire at the same time as you need to watch your footing.
Viator and Elafonisi company were excellent.

They definitely know what they are doing!
Elafanisi Beach is gorgeous. The bus takes a 1/2 hour stop on the way. When we arrived at about 11 or 12 a.m. in mid-May, there were still a few beach chairs available. Later in the summer, expect not to get one, so be prepared to relax in full sun. The bus is a big one, and the chairs are very comfortable. It’s a Mercedes Benz. At noon, some parts of the sand were a very very faint pink, so don’t expect pink sand, but the water is blue and green, fresh, clean, and so beautiful. I’d considered walking out to where it’s deep enough to swim but it’s really far so I didn’t even try. Basically, this is a place to walk in the sea, enjoy happy people, take photos and relax. Enjoy! The tour company really knows their stuff! They picked us up at Mylos Super Market on the way where they said they would and were almost exactly when they told us they would, like within two minutes! That’s amazing cause it was 55 minutes after their first pick up in Chania.

May 2026 Samaria Hike
Fantastic hike. Water and toilets along the way, walk in sturdy shoes as it's uneven for the whole length and walking poles will help to support if you have dodgy knees!! Plus the coach called at a cafe just before the Samaria gorge hike so we could eat, buy a lunch snack, drink ( fabulous orange juice) and use the facilities. Awesome walk, tiring day but we loved it.

So glad we did this! What a great experience!
We went and did the tour today and had an excellent time! We learned a lot and it was so nice to see how passionate Alex is about the farm. Afterwards we enjoyed samples of everything and the entire experience was beyond our expectations. We highly recommend!

A must do.
A really great day. Michael was informative and huge fun. Loved the shepherd farm and the pottery. All very interactive. The olive oil factory was closed but we managed to get to another one for a look around. Lunch was great and saw some spectacular scenery.

Anthony made our tour absolutely unforgettable! The whole experience was so much fun, from riding through incredible terrain to taking in the most breathtaking views. Everything was well-organized, and Anthony was beyond helpful and friendly the entire time, making sure we felt comfortable and had the best experience possible. Highly recommend…such an amazing adventure!

Great Trip with Beautiful Views
We had a wonderful experience on this hike. Although it’s officially rated as “easy,” it didn’t feel that way for everyone in our group. Our guide, Nikos, explained that the difficulty rating comes from the official mountain authorities, not the travel agencies.
Personally, I found it easy, but some people did struggle a bit. The trail is downhill all the way, so if you have knee problems, it might not be as easy as advertised. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, but you do need to keep your eyes on the path while walking, so make sure to stop now and then to enjoy the views.
Regular trainers were fine for me, but walking boots might be a better choice for extra support. Our guide, Nikos, was fantastic - informative, funny and very attentive. After the hike, we even went for a refreshing swim while Nikos kindly went back to help struggling hikers.
Overall, it was a great experience. Everything was well organised, clearly explained and we felt very well looked after. Highly recommend!

It was nice to be picked...
It was nice to be picked up by a guide and a small tour bus. We didn’t have to worry about driving the narrow windy roads through the mountains.. The stop was perfect for a bathroom and refreshment break on the way to the beach and the lunch break after the beach was perfect. The beach was so beautiful with soft sand and nice warm and shallow water. Too bad we didn’t see much pink sand. We arrived about 10 min before crowds of people came so we were able to rent two sun beds and umbrella. It would’ve been too hot if they weren’t available.
Really enjoyed the beach. Thought it was much nicer than Balos beach

Great experience that was...
Great experience that was out of our comfort zone. George, Harry and Barbara were wonderful and made us feel safe! We also loved that the pictures they took were provided via Airdrop before the excursion ended.
For anyone booking in the future, a sturdy set of tennis shoes would be best. Water shoes and Chaco’s/Teva’s were not good choices, when you are walking thru the gorge over uneven ground/rocks/in the water, etc.

Outstanding Experience
From pick up at the hotel to drop off everything was very well organised. The horses are incredible and extremely well looked after. I always worry when booking a trip like this it will be like the old school pony trekking with board horses but not the case here!
The owners take great care in choosing the right horse for you, I have a hip issue at the moment but they worked around that to ensure I was safe and that I was enjoying the experience with out making me feel isolated from the rest of the group.
Once back we had an incredible lunch served with home made wine, the food just kept coming and was so so good!
The owners are welcoming and funny and make the experience a joy.
Would we go again absolutely! As an experience rider I would love to go out for longer and get to see so much more of this beautiful countryside.
Thank you for the experience
We will always remember to have 'one more meat ball' ! 🤣
