Aktau is a mountainous sedimentary massif, which reaches a height of 1000 meters and a length of 5 kilometers. The total area of the ridge is 50 square kilometers. It lies in the east of the Almaty region, in the Kerbulak region of the natural park. From the east it is bounded by the Kalshalysek tract, the valley of the dried up rivers Kokterek and Bokabaidyn-Ashasy. The sands of Aigaikum are located in the south. Aktau is called a "dead" mountain because nothing grows on it. Another name for the protected area is the Museum of the Earth's Past. Aktau consists of colored stones, the age of which, according to various sources, is 60,000,000 years. The mountain is a set of sandstone, red clay, pink carnelian, jasper and white quartz.

Great Tour!

This was a great tour. The petroglyphs at Tanbaly are the best I’ve ever seen. I got lots of great photos of the petroglyphs and the adjacent scenery. The walking isn’t very difficult. My guide was Nursultan. His English is perfect and he is very friendly and personable. This tour is absolutely worth it. Tanbaly is a true hidden gem in Kazakhstan.

Worth the long day

The 16-hour tour can be tiring, but it was absolutely worth it for the incredible experiences and breathtaking scenery along the way. The amount we paid was definitely worth it, considering everything we got to see and experience. The van was comfortable, and our tour guide was accommodating, helpful, and made the journey more enjoyable. Overall, this tour was one of the highlights of my trip to Kazakhstan. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Kazakhstan. It is a must-do experience!

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The lakes and canyons were incredibly beautiful, and we were given ample time to enjoy all of them without feeling rushed. Nurzhan was a great guide and we enjoyed our time with him. The guesthouse was also very welcoming, and we had a unique experience staying in the yurt. I would strongly recommend the 2-day tour over the day tour as Kaindy lake was the best part.

Guided hike review

John/Nuzhan was an excellent guide. Flawless English and good company. The hike to the lake is easy and not technical at all (there is even an option to walk the whole way on a concrete road), but with quite some meters of ascend it makes for a nice excercise. Overall a fun, active day trip just a short drive from Almaty.

We took a 2-day tour from Almaty to Altyn Emel National Park with Kazakhstan Very Nice. It was a great tour! The guide was very friendly, spoke good English, and had a sense of humor! Communication beforehand was handled very well via WhatsApp. The tour includes a hotel pick-up. At the end of the tour, we had a different hotel, and that was absolutely no problem for the drop-off. Everything in the tour is as described! We stayed in a very well-maintained guesthouse. The food was very tasty and more than sufficient (vegetarian options are available here). The rooms had twin beds and a private bathroom. The accommodation has Wi-Fi. During our tour, we saw a small snake, a lizard, and gazelles a few times. Our guide showed us how the Singing Dune works. It was nice that we returned to the Guesthouse after the sand dune and had the opportunity to shower again. We concluded the tour with a delicious lunch at the Guesthouse before heading back to Almaty. Another huge plus: We were a small group of 4 (including the guide) in a 4x4. I highly recommend this tour! We had a great experience.

The Kolsai Kaindy Lakes & Charyn Canyon overnight tour is a must-do while you’re in Almaty! The stops are well-spaced with rest stops every 60-90 minutes for the long portions of the drive. Day 1 we had short stops at Moon Canyon and Black Canyon, then lunch, then a couple of hours at Kolsai lake. Day 2 we had the morning at Kaindy Lake and afternoon at Charyn Canyon which was the highlight for me. At each stop there were options for every fitness level so you could ride/walk/hike as far as you liked. Zhuldyz (tour guide) and Alex (driver) were absolutely terrific. There’s a lot of driving in these two days, and Alex handled the roads very well and safely. Zhuldyz (who also went by Julie or Jule) was informative, funny, and made sure everyone had a good experience. She was very clear about the activities and what we could expect, which helped everyone get the most out of each stop. She shared lots of interesting information without overloading us with facts. And she always answered our questions with a smile.

Meeting is at 04:30 but...

Meeting is at 04:30 but bus doesn’t really leave until 05:00+, then gas station stop, so 05:30 by the time you really get going. The bus isn’t that comfortable. Besides this, probably one of the better day trips I’ve done. Super busy, fun, I met a lot of people, cool spots, the horse riding was really good, too. The old bus ride up to the lake was cool, in general it’s quite a well thought out day trip, Luba was lovely and knowledgeable.
