Itineraries for Your Trip to Liverpool
1 Day in Liverpool for First Timers
If there's one thing I love more than visiting my home-away-from-home, it's encouraging others to do the same. Known for its port heritage, musical legacy, and strong sense of community, Liverpool is truly a must-see stop on any tour of the UK, because as Gerry and the Pacemakers famously sing, it's a place that doesn't care what your name is and will never turn you away. Based on my many, many visits, here are my top tips for experiencing the best of Liverpool in just one day.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a ferry across the Mersey, obviously.
It can get cold out on the Mersey, especially in rainier months, so layer up and bring a brolly.
Liverpool is home to several must-see landmarks, including Liverpool Cathedral and Pier Head. Since these are dotted all around the city, it’s worth taking advantage of hop-on hop-off services to tick them all off with ease, especially if you’re on limited time. For the full experience, you’ll also want to fit in a ferry ‘cross the Mersey for the best views of the famous waterfront.
Liverpool's rich cultural scene offers an array of afternoon activities, with something to suit every first timer. Pop music lovers can learn about Liverpool’s music scene and most famous export at The Beatles Story exhibition on Royal Albert Dock, while the nearby Merseyside Maritime Museum delves into Liverpool’s nautical past. Football fans might even squeeze in a tour of Anfield Stadium, the legendary home of Liverpool FC.
Liverpool's nightlife is second to none, making a night out a must for any first timer. The Cavern Quarter—home of the Cavern Club—remains a popular spot for live music, while Ropewalks is a big draw for late-night revelry. The Georgian Quarter is known for its truly traditional pubs, like Peter Kavanagh's. Craft beer enthusiasts will love the Baltic Triangle, a paradise of breweries and bars. However, my personal favorite is Lark Lane, just off Sefton Park. It’s a short taxi ride or bus journey from the city center, but offers a uniquely local vibe.
