1 Day in Doha for First Timers

Curated by David Johnstonwho regrets not spending more time in Qatar on stopovers.

Doha, the capital and lively heart of Qatar, has long sat in the shadow of popular Gulf cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. However, thanks to hosting the World Cup and its convenience as a transit point for intercontinental flights, Doha is being discovered by more and more people.

It took me several transfers through Doha Airport before I made the time to explore the city. Once I did, I regretted those missed opportunities, as I became fascinated by Qatar’s culture and its blend of traditional and modern. If you have a stopover for one day in Doha and don’t know how to spend it, we recommend following our 1-day Doha itinerary for first-timers.

The afternoon heat can be too intense for outdoor activities, so find indoor alternatives.

If you only have time for one thing, make it wandering Souq Waqif, looking for souvenirs and food.

Afternoon

As the afternoon arrives, Doha’s classic desert heat typically sets in, so make the most of the best things to do in Doha for first-timers that also happen to be indoors and climate-controlled. Culture-seekers can learn more about Qatar and the wider Middle East through the world-class Museum of Islamic Art and National Museum of Qatar, both of which have exhibits that take hours to explore. If that doesn’t interest you, head to the Villaggio Mall for shopping, gondola rides, and family-friendly fun.

Night

Evenings can be an excellent time to explore Doha—particularly cruising around the city in a traditional dhow. One of the best ways to end 1 day in Doha for first-timers is to see what Qatar’s desert is like. Hop aboard a desert safari to journey into the country’s sand dunes, driving over the rugged terrain in a 4WD. Stop at a remote camp and set off on a camel ride to see what the desert looks like under a starry night sky, before returning to Doha.
