Interesting and easy walking tour
Our guide, Mohamed, met us on time at the agreed upon spot and showed us through the streets of Stone Town, where we likely would have become lost on our own. As we walked, at a reasonable pace, he explained the history of the area to us, in explicit and easily understandable English.

Great tour with all the highlights
Amina was an amazing guide. We learned so much from her. She was so adaptable and was able to navigate us around rain and Eid craziness in town. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on this tour. We felt like we hit all the highlights of Stonetown that we could have in one tour.

Excellent shore excursion
This tour was excellent and worked really well as a shore excursion. The meeting point was less than a kilometre from the ship. The tour was also a fraction of the price of a similar tour from the ship. Nassor was an excellent guide - friendly and very knowledgeable. Stone Town itself is really interesting and not to be missed in Zanzibar.

A feast at Forodhani
Kassim provided a very insightful tour of Stone Town prior to going to Forodhani to try out the street food. At Forodhani, Kassim recommended trying a variety of fantastic dishes, starting with a Zanzibar pizza and sugar cane juice and ending with a crepe. I only wish that I had not had lunch as there was so much to try.

Amazing Food tour
Amazing way to see some of Stone Town and learn about local food. Juma was an outstanding guide who also helped us learn more about Ramadan and local traditions. The Zanzibar Mix soup was our favourite! So yummy. Would recommend this tour and Juma 10/10

Fascinating city and tour !
Amina was a lovely guide! She was very knowledgeable about the history of Zanzibar. Stone Town was not itself as impressive to us as the history behind it. Prison Island and the beach cookout were also perfect. A great way to experience Zanzibar!

Stone Town Tour
We had an amazing and informative experience with our wonderful and insightful tour guide and driver, Rakib. He took us through every corner in Stone Town and even to a local restaurant in there where we enjoyed some local food. The experience was a 10/10 and I’d recommend to future travelers. He made the experience worthwhile.

People Also Ask
What is Stone Town known for?
Also called Mij Mkongwe (“Old Town” in Swahili), Stone Town is the oldest part of Zanzibar City, the capital of Tanzania’s Zanzibar Island. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its mix of Arab, Persian, Swahili, Indian, and European cultural influences, the former coastal trading town is famed for its bazaars and winding alleys.
Why is it called Stone Town?
The town’s buildings—most dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries—are constructed with coral rag, a pinkish limestone produced from coral reef, and supported with mangrove timber. This gives Stone Town its distinctive look. Another architectural feature is the intricately carved entranceways known as Zanzibar doors.
What is there to do in Stone Town?
Learn about the island’s Zanzibar Sultanate during a visit to the 19th-century Palace Museum, wander through the Old Fort, Stone Town’s oldest monument, observe people haggling over produce and seafood at Darajani Market, and honor the brutal fates of the people traded in Zanzibar at the Old Slave Market, once the largest of its kind.
How long should I spend in Stone Town?
A full day here will let you tick off most of the main sights. A guided tour—options abound, including food or history-themed tours— is most convenient for day trippers, as you’ll avoid getting lost in the labyrinth of streets. To soak up the unique atmosphere, aim for two or three days.
Can I drink alcohol or wear shorts in Stone Town?
Unless you’re at the beach, avoiding wearing shorts in Stone Town is best. Locals are used to seeing international tourists, but it’s best to show respect by covering up knees, chests, and shoulders. While alcohol is not part of Zanzibar’s culture, it is easy to find within licensed bars and restaurants.
What language do they speak in Stone Town?
Swahili is the official language of Zanzibar. It’s the primary language throughout East Africa, so learning a few greetings or basic phrases is a good idea. That said, both English and Arabic are commonly spoken on the island. People within tourist areas usually know other European languages, such as French or Italian.
