Admission to Fort Christian costs US$10 per person. It's a popular stop on St Thomas tours, but many only pass by and don't include the opportunity to go inside. If you book a tour that visits the interior of Fort Christian, check to see if admission fees are included.

Fort Christian was built by Danish colonists in the 1670s to protect Charlotte Amalie from enemy forces, including pirates, and is the oldest building in the US Virgin Islands. It wasn’t painted red until two centuries later, in 1874. It served as everything from a church to a prison—today it houses a museum.

If you go inside Fort Christian, you’ll be able to see some of its old rooms, including jail cells and a courthouse. The fort also houses the Fort Christian Museum, which features artifacts dating back to the 17th century. These include Danish weapons, religious items, and even pirates’ possessions.

Fort Christian is located on the Charlotte Amalie Waterfront, across the street from the Emancipation Garden. It's easy to get to on foot from elsewhere in town, and the cruise terminal is roughly a 5-minute taxi ride away. VITRAN public buses also stop nearby.

Fort Christian is open Monday–Friday from 9am until 3pm and closed on weekends. It’s best to check with local guides about any public holiday closures. If you can’t make it during the opening hours, it’s still worth checking out the red edifice from the outside, especially around sunset.
