Full of sunshine, Kamloops is located in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory, on the unceded ancestral lands of the Secwépemc Nation. This city in the heart of British Columbia’s Southern Interior is surrounded by ski mountains, scrubland, and rivers, making it a wonderful destination for hiking and mountain biking. Besides exploring the outdoors, things to do in Kamloops include taking on the Kamloops Wine Trail, learning from your hosts at the Secwépemc Museum & Heritage Park, and hitting up one of the city’s many festivals.
Kamloops offers fun in all seasons, so the best time to visit depends on your interests. Mid-November to mid-April is when skiers and snowboarders will want to hit the slopes at Sun Peaks Resort and Harper Mountain, while the end of May means it’s time for the Kamloops Wine & Beverage Festival. July and August are busy and warm as visitors flock to the area’s 100-plus lakes, and September and October bring vibrant autumn colors and bustling farmers markets.
Downtown Kamloops is small and walkable, with plenty of cafés and restaurants, and the public bus system is serviceable if you plan on staying within the city. If you’re hoping to check out some of the region’s parks, hiking trails, and wineries, you’ll find it much more convenient to have your own car. There are a few car rental agencies in town if you didn’t drive in.
Check out The Noble Pig brewpub on Victoria Street for excellent eats and a rotating menu of creative beers. Almost everything is made in-house, and its shady veranda and cozy interior have made it a beloved neighborhood spot. Some favorites include the crispy pickles, pulled pork mac and cheese, and stuffed Yorkshire pudding—comfort foods that are perfect for a leisurely lunch or a late dinner.
