Almost every street in Deira gives way to a shaded souk, wooden dhow wharf, or bustling modern mall. Sprawling northward of Dubai Creek, this is one of Dubai’s oldest quarters and oil-boom hubs—one that bridges traditional and modern. Unsurprisingly, there’s no shortage of things to do in Deira. Wander old-time Gold Souk and Spice Souk, delve into hidden museums, pass creaking dhows on abra boats over the creek, savor world foods, and for a change, sample the box-fresh beaches and malls of Deira’s shiny new Dubai Islands development.
Dubai’s extreme May-September heat makes outdoor sightseeing seriously challenging, so exploring Deira in the cooler December-March season is best as it's when average highs hover under 80°F (27°C). No matter when you visit, plan your outings for early to midmorning or early evening. The main souks are open all day but typically crowded by late morning, and many shops shut for the afternoon. Hours often vary on Fridays, for Ramadan, and for public holidays like Eid.
Walking through Deira is best as it frees you to find tucked-away attractions, but you'll find public transport is extensive. Dubai’s metro network crisscrosses the district: Take the Green line to the Gold Souk and the Red to the creekside. Bus connections are good, with major stops near the Gold Souk and the Deira City Center stop close to the Dhow Wharfage. Cabs are plentiful, but self-driving is difficult due to heavy traffic and limited parking.
After exploring old Deira, sample its newer side at Deira Waterfront Market on Deira Corniche. An upgrade from the old Deira Fish Market, this air-conditioned oasis is chockablock with fish, seafood, meat, fruit, vegetables, and specialty stalls. Admire the stacks of fresh lobster, kingfish, and crab, and bag some dates, mangosteens, or guava as thirst-quenching snacks. Then, with your appetite whetted, stroll the corniche to feast on fresh seafood at an alfresco restaurant terrace overlooking the sea.
