If you want to see elephants, Udawalawe National Park is the place to go. Unlike at some of the denser parks, the open grasslands here make it incredibly easy to spot herds of wild elephants, crocodiles, and water buffalo. Day trips from Bentota involve an early start to catch the animals at their most active. A guided tour means you’ll have a dedicated jeep and a driver who doubles as a spotter. Guides know exactly which watering holes the herds frequent, and you can only enter the park with a specially equipped 4WD vehicle and an approved driver or guide.
