It takes about 20 minutes to climb the 800 stairs to Mihintale. Wear comfortable footwear (the route is slippery in parts) and bring sun protection; there’s not much shade.
Shoes must be taken off before undertaking the final climb up to Meditation Rock, the highest panoramic point. Wear socks if you’d rather not go barefoot. And keep in mind that the stone stairs can scorch feet during the day.
As this is a religious place, a modest dress code is required. Knees and shoulders must be kept covered. Men should stick to long, loose pants, while women may want to travel with a light shawl they can use as a cover-up.
There are limited refreshments sold on-site, so consider bringing water. You will work up a thirst during the climb.
