Great tour. You get to visit a third generation Montecristi Panama hat factory. Learn how they make them. We watched as a woman who has been weaving the hats for 54 years working on a hat. Then you see how they steam press the shape of a traditional fedora. Then you have time to shop for one if you want. Everyone there was super helpful. After Montecristi you head to a lookout point with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. Then you visit a artisanal coffee plantation and store. You learn how to make several styles of coffee and try a couple. Next lunch is at a restaurant on the beach. It's not included in the cost of the tour, but it is super cheap and huge portions. Might want to split a dish. Lastly you visit a artisan chocolate factory and store. Learn how they make a traditional coffee from the past and chocolate from today. You also get to try several chocolate samples and have the opportunity to buy some. All the stores you visit are locally owned and a small business. Great tour and great guide Tony and driver Caesar. Highly recommend this tour.

A great experience. Christian was outstanding and much needed as a translator. The only negative was too much dead time waiting for our turn at the different locations. Too many tours at the same locations at the same time.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thanks for the review. Chris is a great guide.

Our tour guide, Chris, was excellent. He was personable and spoke English as good as any American, since he is an American expat. He was also fluent in Spanish and could translate some of the local presenters for us. We learned a lot about Ecuador, coffee, chocolate, Panama hats and we got to see a lot of the city and nearby towns.

Excellent tour; learned a lot about Ecuadorian history, culture, growing, harvesting & products of Cacao & Coffee. Pedro our guide was excellent, informative and easy to understand. Highly recommend both this tour and Pedro as a guide.

the tour was very good the guides pedro and roberto were excellent it was advertised and coffee and chocolate but it also included seeing the panama hat making that being said thd downside was that the transport vehicle had no microphone and it was difficukt to hear what was being said in the back of the bus the other detriment was the lunch stop at 3:30 it was too late and most people might have preferred going back to the ship at that point all in all if thise issues were addressed id highly recommend the tour

We were not aware that we would have to buy our lunch. We expect to be able to use a credit card for personal expenses but the restaurant we went to did not accept them. Also, the food left A LOT to be desired. We’re adventurous in our culinary experiences, so the quality was very disappointing. Our guide and driver were excellent, but our culinary experience clouded our overall enjoyment. The write up of the tour should mention that lunch is on our own and provide an approximate US cash only spending amount.
Response from Host, Mar 2025
Thanks for taking the time to give us the feedback Patricia. We do state on TripAdvisor that lunch is not included, but the platform does not display it prominently enough. It is hidden down the bottom of the page.

What an amazing experience! Wish I could give our guide Christian 10 stars because 5 just isn't enough. He was so knowledgeable and personable. It was like traveling with a local friend sharing the experiences he enjoys. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Christian and Manta Tours. You won't regret it.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thanks Carol. Christian is the man. Have a great Cruise

Pedro was a fantastic tour guide and we really enjoyed all of our stops on this tour. The chocolate factory was a tiny family owned restaurant and chocolate processing building and there were more local people dining there than there were tourists (always a good sign as to the quality of the product). At the coffee plantation (again, small family owned), we even got to help pick a few coffee beans!!!
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thanks so much Jonathon, we are glad you like the tour.
scott_w, Jan 2025
We really liked Pedro who spoke understandable English and acted as an interpreter at each of the sites where the owners spoke only Spanish. We were impressed with the in-depth presentations at the chocolate and panama hat stores and the wonderful tour of the coffee plantation. With lunch, the tour was 7+hours.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us a review Scott. Enjoy the rest of your cruise.

This was an excellent tour which was a lot of fun. The coffee farm and chocolate stop were informative and enjoyable, the lunch excellent and very good value, and we were so impressed with the panama hat making that we bought two hats. Pedro was a wonderful guide - he was informative, answered all our questions, and made it his mission to give us the best time.. it was a bonus to be part of a small(6) and friendly group

Juan was a great host and tour leader. Loved all of the stops and how informative they were. We had opportunities to buy but never felt pressured.
Norine_S, Nov 2023
Our tour guide, Pedro, was knowledgeable and helpful. Had the best hot chocolate ever at the chocolate factory and great tour. The coffee farm tour was more basic. The location offered a beautiful view. This tour covered a lot of the region and was very interesting.
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Hello Norine, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. Pedro is a great guide. We hope you enjoy the rest of your cruise
Joyce_P, Nov 2023
Our "tour" guide didn't give us any information about the current or past history while we were on the bus. He answered questions that we had, but really it seemed he know little.
The chocolate tour was just a small shop. They were nice people, but once again, our "guide", Pedro had to receive all information from the proprietors in Spanish and then translate for us. I'm sure he had never been there nor did he do any research about the place.
The coffee tour was just as bad. The owner of the coffee farm began by walking into the wood without any explanation as to where we were going on a very rugged path. All info was once again just a translation from the owner to Pedro. Pedro didn't offer any researched info. I would not waste my money on this tour.
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Dear Joyce
It’s very upsetting to read you did not enjoy the tour. We work very hard to do be the best guides we can. Thank you for taking the time to communicate these issues. We will get to the bottom of them and solution them immediately.
I have spoken to Pedro and can see he did not meet your expectations. We insist all our guides take the time to communicate local history and culture while on the bus. I regret Pedro fell short here.
We do have another client that was on your tour that left a stellar review for Pedro, so it's a little difficult to blame him completely. For example, we intentionally let the owners of the Coffee farm and Chocolate Factory give their explanations, as they are the Experts. Pedro is a guide, not a coffee farmer or chocolatier.
If you would like to contact us directly, I am sure we can make it up to you. Please send me an email at mantatourguides@gmail.com or contact me on WhatsApp.
Kind regards,
Tom

Exciting with a visit to the hat shop, the chocolate factory and coffee plantation but for little time. Too much bus drive to get lunch. We were also 18 people instead of the Max 11 that Viator wrote. Therefore, visitors also took longer. We did not reach the entire program as prescribed.

Tak for din feedback.
