Top Western Cape Bird Watching

As a photographer and Tour Guide based in Hermanus for approximately 20 years, I am passionate about the Whales, Birds & Nature. There are seabirds, shorebirds, coastal scrub birds, water birds and mountain fynbos to experience within the Overberg. You don't need to be an avid birder, beginners & nature lovers are left thoroughly impressed by the splendour of our area, and I often have guests return for a second tour because there is simply too much to take in all in one trip. I look forward to meeting you, sharing stories and finding those birds you're searching for.

Newlands Forest, an Afrotemperate region features ancient trees and a shaded canopy, offering a cool retreat during summer. This hidden gem is a trending tourist destination with well-defined hiking trails, family- and pet-friendly circuits, a mountain bike route, mobile food trucks, and serviced restrooms. On weekends, you may observe indigenous communities quietly performing ancient rituals, reflecting the spirit of ubuntu in South Africa. Your guide highlights the indigenous knowledge systems and conservation efforts spearheaded by SANBI (South African Biodiversity Institute). The tour includes a visit to Panorama Guesthouse & Forest Sanctuary, located on the forest's perimeter, where you can explore a unique crystal collection and meet our welcoming staff. The route ends at Kirstenbosch Gardens, with a stop at the Lady Anne Barnard ruins. Your guide will share re-enactment stories about the site's colonial history and its role in creating South Africa’s national garden.

Cruise in ultimate style while you discover all the unique coves and bays on the way to the famous Knysna Heads. We cruise alongside the beautiful turquoise Featherbed Bay where it’s very protected and one can cool down with a swim in summer. Sit back and relax, enjoy the feeling of the sun on your face, and the wind in your hair, while viewing the beautiful town of Knysna framed by the Outeniqua mountains. Our captain will be sure to tell you about all the secret spots in Knysna to explore. Oysters, drinks and snacks are available on pre-order. Remember to bring your camera, hat, sunscreen, binoculars and something warm, as it can get cooler on the water than on land, especially during the late afternoons. Please bring your own beach towel, should you want to swim.
