There are many things to do in Western Anatolia, a region engulfing some of Turkey’s best cities and attractions. Along the Aegean coast, places like Kusadasi are the gateway to beaches and water activities, while Selcuk and Izmir lead to the ancient city of Ephesus and other historical sites. Pamukkale contains natural travertine pools and the ruins of Hierapolis, while farther east, the Cappadocia region boasts wild volcanic landscapes perfect for hiking or sailing above in a hot-air balloon.
The best time to visit Western Anatolia is during the spring months of April and May or early autumn in September and October. During those months, the weather is warm and mild, compared to the hot temperatures typical in the deep summer months and the wet and cold winters. During the spring, wildflowers will be blooming.
Turkey, including Western Anatolia, is well-connected, with extensive bus lines between major cities and towns and minibusses between smaller destinations. Flying is possible, though you must usually fly through the country’s major travel hubs like Izmir, Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya. It’s easy to travel between the major sites of Pamukkale, Ephesus, and Cappadocia by bus, though some routes are quite long.
Make sure to visit sites, including Hierapolis, Lake Salda, and the Kaymakli Underground City, in or near the major tourist attractions in this part of Turkey. The Aegean coast of Western Turkey is famous for its food, including meze, small dishes in olive oil that are usually eaten with fish. The roads in this part of Turkey are very good if you choose to drive.
