Te Mata Peak is an unusual craggy peak that rises 1,309 feet (399 meters) from the plains of Hawke’s Bay, behind the towns of Hastings and Havelock North. Shaped like a grass-covered tsunami with a rocky crest, Te Mata Peak is a popular hiking destination. You can also drive to the peak for fabulous views, especially at sunset.

Hawke’s Bay is a large bay in the eastern North Island, as well as the name of the region in which the bay is found. The main towns are Napier and Hastings; the two are often just referred to as Napier-Hastings. Hawke’s Bay is famous for its quality wine and the 1930s architecture.

Sileni Estates is an award-winning winery in the North Island’s premier wine-producing region, Hawke’s Bay. Located in what’s known as the Bridge Pa Triangle outside Hastings, Sileni Estates offers tasting experiences—either in a tasting room or among the vines—as well as winery tours. Among the wines it produces are sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, and merlot.

Hemming a stretch of coastline in Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North Island, Waimarama Beach serves as a magnet for beachgoers while still exuding a sense of splendid isolation. Here, eggshell-white sands, topaz seas, white breakers, and ocean views unfurl for around 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) past the wooden bungalows of Waimarama village, tempting sunbathers, young families, surfers, and sightseers.
