BOOK IT you won't regret
Wow! If we had known how it would be before booking we would not have hesitated! Just book it and show up. You will have a great day! Coos, castles, snow capped mountains, lakes, and more. Thank you

Great tour!
Jim was a great guide. We enjoyed seeing some of the highlands. The highlight for us were the standing stones. However, we also enjoyed Inveraray Castle and Gardens.

Excellent day trip!
Yvonne is an excellent guide and took great care of us! She shared a lot of history and even made the longer drive portions entertaining. She also took care with our safety on some of the slippery climbs to make sure we felt comfortable

So much to do, so little time
Each segment of the trip had its wonderful experiences. My only disappointment was being unable to go up to see the location at DunAdd but I recognized the safety situation.

Standing Stones and Castles
This was an amazing small group tour. Callum was an awesome guide who kept everyone engaged. He was able to make the day fun and enjoyable for everyone despite us each having different expectations. The stops were interesting and varied. I highly recommend this trip.

Even though a long day it...
Even though a long day it was filled with great scenery. John did a great job on keeping us informed and moving along.

This tour is my favourite Scotland memory
Seriously the best tour ever. James our guide was hilarious and put up with a lot of my teasing banter. He looked after everyone equally and we were all included unlike other tours I’ve been on where no one talks to each other at all.
Inveraray Castle was an absolute highlight for me, been dreaming of visiting since I was 7. Cannot recommend highly enough. Be sure to ask James about his paper plane achievements

More than than the city
Delightful day in countryside, allowed us to see a few castles, and view Scotland’s beauty outside of the city

This was a great...
This was a great experience enhanced by our guide Jim’s knowledge. My only comment is that I wish the description if the trip detailed more about all the places that you stop throughout the day

Terrific Scottish and clans tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. His first name was Grame. Could you give me his last name and contact information?

People Also Ask
What is Inveraray Castle known for?
This Gothic Revival castle is famous for its whimsical, fairytale-like exterior and picturesque setting. Constructed in the mid-1700s in the West Highlands near Loch Fyne, the castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Argyll, an influential Scottish noble family. Inveraray Castle is also known as a Downton Abbey filming location.
Does anyone still live at Inveraray Castle?
Yes. While the Scottish castle is open to the public, it remains a family home. The 13th Duke of Argyll and his family live in private apartments within the estate. Visitors can admire the State Dining Room, Tapestry Drawing Room, and Armoury Hall, all containing centuries-old relics and decorations.
Can I explore the grounds of Inveraray Castle?
Yes. The well-maintained gardens span 180 hectares. They are particularly popular in spring and early summer when daffodils, azaleas, and rhododendrons burst with color. There is also a 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) walking trail around the estate called the Dun Na Cuaiche Woodland Walk, renowned for its native conifers and panoramic views.
How long should I spend at Inveraray Castle?
That depends. An hour is recommended for visiting the castle’s interior, which extends throughout three floors. If you’d like to spend more time roaming the historic estate on one of its designated walking trails, you’ll probably want to allot an additional hour. The gardens are typically open year-round.
Can I visit Inveraray Castle on a guided tour?
Visits to Inveraray Castle tend to be self-guided. However, guided tours can be arranged on request via advanced bookings. Many private tour operators also offer excursions to Inveraray Castle as a popular day trip from Glasgow—it’s about a 90-minute drive by car, and tours generally offer private round-trip transportation.
Is Inveraray Jail located inside Inveraray Castle?
No, although the two attractions can be reached on foot, the jail and courthouse are a 10- to 15-minute walk from Inveraray Castle. The nineteenth-century prison—where men, women, and children as young as seven were kept locked up—is now an interactive museum. Visitors can explore four floors of exhibits alongside costumed performers.
