Flamingos in the Wetlands near Walvis Bay

This is an exciting and interesting shore excursion starting and ending in the port of Walvis Bay. We explore Walvis Bay town and visit the famous wetlands south of Walvis Bay which teams with thousands of flamingos and numerous other shore and seabirds. Afterwards we visit some of the highest dunes in this coastal area. We continue into the Namib Desert and marvel at the so called "moonscape", a rugged and rocky scenery reminding us of the surface of the moon. Our next destination is an oasis in the Swakop Canyon, a former farm which has now been turned into a pleasant resort with a restaurant in the middle of the "Moonscape". Afterwards we return to the coast and visit the historical town of Swakopmund which was founded in 1892 by the German Colonial Reich. Your guide will relate the history of Swakopmund and explain the distinct colonial character and origin of the various historical builidngs. We return to Walvis Bay port in the afternoon.

Don’t miss the experience

Great tour with Wild Space! Pick up at port right on time then off to see flamingos, salt mine and the dunes. The dunes are huge, amazing and driving up, down and around them was awesome. We were able to spot some wildlife along the way. Delicious lunch too. Guide was knowledgeable and helpful.

A personal tour with...

A personal tour with another couple and the guide. Interesting journey to the town on excellent roads through dunes area. The town has some fascinating old buildings and also a surprising number of luxury shops. On the way back we visited the salt pans and saw flamingos in the distance and a couple of pelicans by the side of the road. The guide was very informative and personable.

Wonderful experience exploring the dunes around Sandwich Harbor! Our guide, Kobus, was so informative and an excellent driver! Everything about the day was great - we were late due to Namibia immigration poor procedures and Kobus waited for us. Then the experience on the dunes was phenomenal and the picnic on the dunes was Great!!

Great adventure into the oldest desert

Unusual and great experience in the world’s oldest desert. Our guide Leon gave us insight into this vast place. He opened my eyes to the different types of deserts and what made everything look the way it does. It was great to stop in several places and really feel the ground and the atmosphere. Lunch and snack were excellent. We saw ostriches, ground squirrels and springbok. It’s a truly unique day.

A great shore excursion

We booked the Sandwich Harbour tour as it was much cheaper than the shore excursions being offered by our cruise line and it did not disappoint. The pick up and drop off at the port was smooth and on time while the vehicles were comfortable and well maintained (they didn’t squeeze too many into the 4x4s). Our driver/guide was CJ and he was brilliant, as were all the other drivers from the company we interacted with at the stops. They take you to cool spots and show you how to get the best pictures.

Full day Sandwich Harbour

A wonderful day travelling along the beach and into the Sandwich Harbour and dunes, with great guide. For those arriving by cruise ship, the guide, Uwe, met us harborside. We drove out of Walvis Bay stopping to see flamingos, pelicans and the salt lakes. We continued along the beach and up into the sand dunes, stopping at a number of incredible viewpoints. Along the beach we saw lots of cormorants and seals. In the dunes, Uwe pointed out the tracks of hyenas. He suggested we take off our shoes to enjoy the feeling of sand between our toes. He dropped us off at the top of the dunes and we climbed/slid down barefoot. We stopped for drinks and lunch, a selection of meats, samosas, cheese with cake and sweet deserts, very enjoyable. On our return route, we drove through the bush where we saw Oryx and Springboks. Returning to Walvis Bay, we stopped again the see the pelicans and flamingos and also saw a jackal wandering along the beach, searching for mussels etc. Uwe was very knowledgeable and we had a great day out with him. Highly recommend this trip.

Fantastic trip from start to finish. Good communication in advance & David was an excellent guide & driver making sure we got all the info & opportunities for photos. Great snacks as well!
