Most tours in Split stop in the Roman era. This one starts in the 20th century. Secret Split is a walk through a part of the city most visitors never reach—neighbourhoods built after World War II, when a new vision for life, space, and society was being tested in concrete. You’ll hear the story of Split 3, a socialist urban plan that was once a utopian experiment—and ended up featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. We’ll walk through a city within a city—a fully pedestrian zone, built for community, for children, for daily life. You’ll hear about the architects who shaped it, what they believed in, and how that belief still shapes how people live here today. This is not a nostalgic walk. It’s a real one. You’ll see raw buildings, clean geometry, open spaces. You’ll learn why brutalism wasn’t just about concrete—it was about care. And you might even start liking it. This tour is for those who want to understand modern life in Split.

A Roman emperor chose this spot partly for its sulphur springs, then quit ruling to grow cabbages. Split has taken both its history and its food seriously ever since. On this private walk, a local shows you the palace everyone comes for, the quarter almost nobody finds, and three places where Split actually eats. Enter Diocletian's Palace through its vaulted cellars and climb into the Peristyle, where a 3,500-year-old Egyptian sphinx still guards the emperor's courtyard. Look up through the open dome of the Vestibule, where klapa singers often perform, and hear why the most powerful man in Rome walked away from his empire for a vegetable garden. Leave by the Golden Gate to rub Gregory of Nin's shiny toe for luck, then cross People's Square and pass Peškarija, the fish market with no flies, thanks to the same sulphur springs that drew the emperor here. Next, slip into Varoš, the old fishermen's quarter of stone houses and narrow lanes, where locals still live before closing your tour.
