Depart Addis Ababa at 07:30 AM. At slightly over 100 km from Addis Ababa, Debre Libanos is one of the best day trips from the Ethiopian capital. The church is monumental and pretty awful on the outside, but the stained-glass windows are attractive. Debre Libanos has one of the most interesting church museums in Ethiopia. Besides the usual ecclesiastical items, there are Italian guns, giant cooking pots, crowns of past emperors and their wives, musical instruments, and old wooden shackles. Fifteen minutes up the hills from the monastery is the cave of Tekla Haimanot, the monastery founder, where the saint is said to have done all his praying. It is also the source of Debre Libanos' famed holy water. Finally, we will take you to the Portuguese Bridge located at the Blue Nile Gorge, where you can admire the stunning landscapes and observe the unique Ethiopian endemic baboons known as Chelada Baboons. You'll also have the opportunity to spot various Ethiopian birds.

There needed to be an itinerary change due to a security situation, so I can’t actually review the destinations as listed. Asmir, the guide, resourcefully put a interesting trip together last minute to avoid a lost day. He was a well-informed, interestimg, kind person. The guide Gebru is really...

The guide Gebru is really sweet and funny, and makes the tour enjoyable. Its quite adventurous so be prepared for that. Can get hot as well, dress appropriately. Watching the baboons is fun, and the stained glass is pretty but the view from the Portuguese bride across the gorge is absolutely fantastic. The food is excellent as well, and so is the coffee.

A great glimpse into authentic Ethiopian life and highlights of the countryside

A really great trip that will be a highlight of my time in Addis Ababa. Dagi was a great guide who made sure everything ran smoothly and answered any questions we had. We got to see all the highlights, including the monastery and geladas, but the long-ish drive each way was a real insight into how many millions of Ethiopians live their lives, an experience that was really valuable to my overall trip and that I would not have gotten were it not for this tour taking me outside the Addis city centre.

The best Addis tour guide ever!

If you’re looking for a tour of Addis, look no further. Gashaw was the best guide we could have imagined! He is insanely knowledgeable on everything Ethiopia, from current events to ancient history, and clearly has a passion for sharing that knowledge. He was super open to changing around the itinerary throughout the day based on the things we showed interest in, and could tell when we were getting tired and were ready to call it a day (but he totally would have kept going if we wanted to). He also generously got us lunch which wasn’t supposed to be included in the tour price, and went out of his way to take us extra places that weren’t part of the original plan. He was also totally open to me filming for my travel vlog YouTube channel and would give me a heads up when we were coming up on something that would make good video content so I could get the camera rolling. This experience exceeded every expectation we had, and we’ll be recommending him and Aspire Ethiopia Tours to everyone we know.
