The Road to Wenchi: Most people think the journey begins when they arrive. It doesn't. Leaving Addis Ababa westward, the road passes through Holeta's rose farms and Dandi's quiet ridge, where the Awash River is born as a whisper in the highland grass. Then the soil darkens, the trees thin, and the landscape announces something older. You are entering volcanic country. Wenchi Is not a mountain you climb. It is a world that collapsed inward, leaving a caldera so vast it reads less like geology and more like myth. Turquoise at midday, jade at dawn, a forested island rising from its centre. One of Ethiopia's largest crater lakes and one of its least-known. Cross by boat. Ride or walk the crater's edge. Let the forest close in dense, endemic, alive with birdlife found almost nowhere else. On the far shore, an island monastery speaks of centuries of deliberate solitude. Wenchi doesn't announce itself. It reveals itself slowly, to those willing to pay attention.
