1 Day in Killarney for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who loves nothing more than an Ireland road trip.

The first time I visited Killarney, it was part of my Ring of Kerry drive, and its delightful shops and pretty scenery left me wanting more. Luckily, I've been able to return to Ireland's gorgeous southwest region, full of rolling green hills and castle ruins around every corner. With only one day in Killarney, I recommend booking a private tour, so you can receive a history lesson from your local guide and avoid the hassle of navigating. This 1-day Killarney itinerary for first-timers includes all the favorite things to do in Killarney National Park, and ways to spend your evenings in town.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a jaunting tour.

Plan for rain and moderate temperatures when visiting Killarney.

Morning

Killarney National Park is just a stone's throw away from the town, so it's easy to head there for even just a few hours. Horse-drawn carriage rides (known as jaunting tours) are a popular way to see some of the sights and learn about the area's Celtic lore. Or, you can pick a tour that includes a boat tour on Lough Leane to take in the scenic views from the water with a stop at Ross Castle when you're done. You really can't go wrong!

Afternoon

Now that you've had time to explore the great outdoors, spend some time walking through Killarney, and grab a bite to eat at a local pub where, if you're lucky, you'll find a fiddle player performing some Irish tunes. Or, you can make your way just a short drive from town to a brewery or pub where you might start with a tour and end with a lunch of fish and chips with a side of curry sauce.

Night

Don't waste away your evening in Killarney at your hotel—head out on the town for some dancing and revelry, or find a cozy pub to settle in for a pint of Guinness. If the weather is clear, Killarney's dark skies offer excellent stargazing opportunities, or you can book a photography tour to snap some shots of the lush green landscape before the sun dips below the horizon. You can even get some photos taken of your crew to memorialize your time in County Kerry.
