1 Day in Baltimore for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who spent many years living on the East Coast and never passes up a chance to return.

I remember my first visit to Baltimore, which was my introduction to Old Bay seasoning and was filled with some of the best seafood I'd tasted. We visited historical sites like Fort McHenry and spent most of our time walking along the waterfront. When I return, I like to do much of the same, and I especially like to see what new restaurants have popped up since my last visit.

While you might only know about Baltimore from the HBO series The Wire, there's so much more to "Charm City" beyond its iconic row houses. If you only have one day in Baltimore, focus on the Inner Harbor and get out on the water if the weather cooperates.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a historical tour of Fort McHenry and other spots.

As with most East Coast cities, summers are hot and humid, winters are cold with some snow, and fall or late spring is the best time to visit.

Morning

Start your morning off by learning about the city on a historical tour. Your guide will shuttle you by van to Fort McHenry and other sites throughout town, pointing out interesting architecture and points of interest along the way. While you won't have much time at each stop, this is a great first activity in Baltimore, as your guide will give you restaurant recommendations and other tips to make your Baltimore visit more interesting.

Afternoon

Now that you've learned about Baltimore's history, you'll be ready for even more exploring. Baltimore's proximity to Washington DC makes it the perfect jumping-off point for your afternoon activity, a half-day tour of the nation's capital. On this private, customizable tour, you can visit the White House, Arlington National Cemetery, or the Lincoln Memorial. Pick-up and drop-off are included, and you'll have time at each site to get out and take photos.

Night

Now that you've had a day of sightseeing, you'll be ready for relaxation on this luxury dinner cruise in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. You'll pass by the Maryland Science Center and see the city lit up at night. Enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet dinner with a carving station before you take a spin on the dance floor as the DJ spins some beats. An on-the-water dance party is a festive way to end your Baltimore visit and is fun for all ages.
