In this trail of about 10 km (round trip) we will have the chance to experience some of the different environments that Tierra del Fuego Island offers us. We will cross the Fuegian Native Forest, we will get to know the important peat bogs and their beautiful reddish tones and we will walk through the imposing Fuegian Andes. We will also see the beaver dams and learn about the history of this animal introduced to the island and the impact on the native ecosystem. We will come across a variety of birds representative of the environments we will pass through. Finally, after a pleasant walk we will arrive at the Laguna Esmeralda where we will be impressed by its bluish green colour due to its glacial origin. We get to the starting point by following national route 3 for about 17 kilometers; we begin the hike at the trail’s parking lot, which quickly takes us deep into the forest. The trail takes us close to a beaver dam and crosses the valley until finding a peat bog, where it will follow the Esmeralda river all the way to its source in the Esmeralda lagoon. After a final climb, we will get to the lagoon: frozen in the winter and dazzling us with its stunning color during the summer. If the weather is good enough, we will have lunch by the lagoon with a breathtaking view of the Albino glacier, the lagoon, and the surroundings. Afterward, we will take the same trail back to the transfer that will take you to your hotel.

There are few places in the world that are as pristine, inhospitable and challenging as the Mitre Peninsula. For years, the Peninsula protected itself because of its difficult access. Today it is the lung of Tierra del Fuego and is a protected area. One can walk around it for days and not meet anyone. It is a difficult place to access, which few are lucky enough to visit. It is a land of legends, many have dared to go around it, defying its rivers, its rugged geography, the weight on the shoulders, the climate that is not always easy. There is no cell phone signal, one really disconnects, it is a place that does not have marked paths. We follow horse tracks, cow tracks, guanaco tracks. That is the greatest challenge. Also in the variety of terrain that is crossed: the pebble beaches, the wetlands, the closed forests, the irregular terrain in general. It is not a conventional trekking under any circumstances. You will be able to live a real adventure at the end of the world.

It is a real fishing village, where visitors can eat fresh fish of the day, with excellent views of the Beagle Channel. We take the RN 3 heading NE, on a winding road framed by the Andes Mountains and lenga forests. We will make a stop at a winter resort. Our second stop will be at Chacra Ruca Kelleñ: a place to appreciate the peace and nature of Tierra del Fuego. We continue our journey along the RP J towards Puerto Almanza: a small fishing village, where mussel farming and crab hunting are carried out. This picturesque town was founded for geopolitical purposes during the conflict with Chile in 1978 over the Picton, Lennox and Nueva Islands due to their strategic location opposite the Chilean town of Puerto Williams, the southernmost town in the world. We will have lunch at a local restaurant and after a day of adventure we begin our return trip.
