Things to do in  Shiga Prefecture

Engaku-ji is considered by some to be an almost-perfect example of Chinese-inspired Zen architecture. It was founded in 1282 by a Chinese monk, and it’s now one of the most famous Zen Buddhist temples in the country and is classified as a Japanese National Treasure. Located in Kamakura, it’s a convenient place to visit on a day trip from Tokyo.

Lake Biwa is a large lake in western Japan near the city of Kyoto. At an estimated four million years old, it's believed to be one of the oldest lakes in the world. It’s also Japan’s largest freshwater lake, and its proximity to Kyoto makes it a popular place for swimming, camping, fishing, boating, and more.

Famed for its torii, a large vermilion gate that floats in the waters of Lake Biwa, Shirahige Shrine is one of the most picturesque places in Shiga prefecture. Believed to date from around 2,000 years ago, the shrine is said to bring fortune and longevity to those who pray there.

The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hieizan has more than 1,200 years of history. It’s the head temple of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, so it’s as significant as it is beautiful. Located at 2,782 feet (848 meters) in the mountains, visitors can admire the views over Kyoto and Lake Biwa while strolling among more than 100 buildings.
