Top Okayama Prefecture Wildlife Encounters in 2026

Experience the magical bioluminescent marine life of Tamano, on the Seto Inland Sea near Naoshima. More than a wildlife-viewing tour, this is a hands-on experience where you’ll use specially designed equipment to collect sea fireflies, observe their brilliant blue bioluminescence up close, and safely release them back into the sea. Led by Trevor, an experienced photographer with more than 14 years of observing and photographing local bioluminescence, you’ll discover the fascinating world of sea fireflies, glowing phytoplankton, and the unique marine environment of the Seto Inland Sea. The experience combines discovery, education, and responsible interaction with local marine life. Perfect for families, couples, photographers, nature lovers, and travelers visiting Naoshima and the Setouchi islands, this intimate nighttime experience offers a rare opportunity to encounter one of Japan’s most enchanting natural phenomena. Selected as a finalist for the Japan Tourism Awards 2027.
