Things to do in  Morro Bay

Three stacks and a rock

Pull into Morro Bay from California Highway 1 and you’ll immediately notice two natural landmarks: Morro Rock, a volcanic mound jutting out of the ocean, and The Stacks, three smokestacks looming over a defunct power plant. Together, these are the symbols of this Central Coast town of dunes and blustery bluffs, where things to do revolve around nature-oriented activities such as surfing, kayaking, and low-key hiking. Morro Bay also makes a good base for wine-tasting trips to San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, plus whale watching in the Pacific.

When to visit

Morro Bay is relatively small and fills up fast during summer weekends, so visit during the week to beat the crowds. Generally, the best time to visit California’s Central Coast is during spring and fall, when the weather is sunny and warm, and the beach crowds have thinned. Spring is the wildflower season, while fall is the wine harvest season. If you can, time your visit for seasonal festivals such as the Morro Bay Kite Festival in late April.

Getting around

Roughly halfway between Monterey and Los Angeles on California’s coast, Morro Bay is an ideal road-trip destination. While SoCo Transit buses can get you to neighboring Los Osos and San Luis Obispo, they are painfully slow, so driving is the better option. Stick to town, and you can easily travel on foot, by bike, or on the Morro Bay Trolley, which follows routes through town during the peak season (typically June–October).

Traveler tip

Visitors looking for a museum fix typically head to the Museum of Natural History near Morro Bay State Park, but the tiny Morro Bay Maritime Museum near the harbor has exhibits about the bay’s maritime history going back thousands of years. Here, you can see a reconstructed Salinan tribe tule boat, learn about the history of commercial fishing and abalone diving, and check out Alma, a World War II-era tugboat built in San Francisco.

People Also Ask
Q:Is Morro Bay worth visiting?
A:

It depends. Morro Bay is small and doesn’t offer as much as nearby San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles, but it’s on the coast and is a nice road-trip destination along California State Highway 1. Lying on a scenic estuary, it's great for nature-oriented activities such as hiking, kayaking, biking, and wildlife watching.

Q:Should I visit Morro Bay or Pismo Beach?
A:

It depends on what you’re after. Morro Bay is a little quieter and still carries a modest fishing village vibe, while Pismo Beach is a livelier surf town with monarch butterfly groves. You can easily visit both, as they’re only a 30-minute drive apart.

Q:How many days do I need to visit Morro Bay?
A:

You don’t need more than one day to visit Morro Bay—you can stop at the beach, check out Morro Rock, and grab a bite along the embarcadero (pier) in half a day. If you want a longer visit, make Morro Bay your base for exploring the nearby coast and wine regions.

Q:Is Morro Bay expensive?
A:

Though it’s part of pricey California, Morro Bay isn’t particularly expensive in terms of eating out or accommodations—there are even plenty of camping options for visitors looking to save money on their stays. During the summer travel season, however, accommodation prices can rise quickly.

Q:Can you climb Morro Rock in Morro Bay?
A:

No, you can’t climb Morro Rock. Although there has been some debate among locals about who can climb Morro Rock, the volcanic mound jutting out of the ocean is a state historic landmark, a peregrine falcon nesting site, and sacred land to the Salinan Indians and Northern Chumash. Therefore, climbing it is prohibited.

Q:Is Morro Bay walkable?
A:

Yes, Morro Bay is walkable. Given its small size and cheerful waterfront, it’s a great place to take a pleasant walk. If you’re looking to stroll, you can start from the Embarcadero, the town’s main thoroughfare, and explore the shops and cafes with outdoor seating to Centennial Plaza.
