Most of the lagoon is privately owned and only accessible with a day pass, which typically costs US$6–10 depending on your entrance point. Yes, Apoyo Lagoon—a freshwater crater lake—is a popular destination for families, but be sure to practice water safety and be aware of your natural surroundings. There are no lifeguards on duty, so keep a close watch on your kids near the water, and bring your own child-sized life jacket if you have one. If you’re traveling with young children, leave the stroller behind; the steep terrain is difficult to navigate with wheels.

It depends on the tour. Most feature round-trip transportation from your hotel in Managua or Granada and an expert guide to lead your trip. Entrance fees, lunch, and gratuities are often included, but double-check your tour details in advance. Many tours combine a trip to the lagoon with other destinations, such as Masaya Volcano or the Islets of Granada.

Water activities are a big part of visiting Apoyo Lagoon, along with observing wildlife. Go for a swim or rent a kayak or paddleboard to head deeper into the lake. Many beaches have floating docks where you can hang out and soak up the sun, and lots of visitors like to go hiking too, with the chance to spot howler monkeys and other animals.

Tourist shuttles and taxis offer fast, convenient transit options; while they’re more expensive than the bus, they’re also more direct. If you choose to take the bus, you’ll need to catch a taxi or tuk-tuk for the final leg of the trip. Or, book a tour that picks you up from your Managua or Granada hotel for seamless travel.
