From Decontaminated Soil to the Future of Fukushima’s Environment Fourteen years have passed since the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. While environmental restoration has been steadily progressing, a large volume of soil generated through decontamination efforts is currently being stored at Interim Storage Facilities within Fukushima Prefecture. Under Japanese law, this soil is required to be finally disposed of outside Fukushima Prefecture by 2045. The Ministry of the Environment is therefore working to foster public understanding of the current state of environmental restoration in Fukushima, future initiatives, and the necessity and safety of efforts toward final disposal outside the prefecture. We believe this provides a highly meaningful opportunity for learning and reflection for those who will play a leading role in shaping the next generation of society.
