Things to do in  Monterosso al Mare

Party of cinque

Monterosso al Mare is one of the five fabulous fishing villages of Cinque Terre National Park. Trains from the north stop here first and the town is easily accessible by car, making it one of the busiest transport hubs on the coast. Bask in its long stretch of sandy beach; set off on foot or by rail to the other four seaside villages; or explore the coastline on a stand-up paddleboard or kayak. A Cinque Terre boat tour ranks as one of the best things to do in Monterosso al Mare.

When to visit

With churning seas and alpine winds, the Cinque Terre coastline in winter is unforgiving. Spring brings more inviting weather, but also the first wave of crowds that overrun this A-list destination until fall. The most popular time of year to visit is the summer, of course, when you can hike the coastal trails or set sail for a pleasure cruise. The early spring and late fall bring unpredictable forecasts, but significantly sparser crowds and milder temperatures.

Getting around

Monterosso al Mare is the most automobile-accessible village in the Cinque Terre—though the historic center itself is pedestrian-only, so you have to park just outside of town. Its streets are also significantly less steep than its neighbors, so getting around on foot is less challenging than in the vertical villages farther south. All five Cinque Terre towns are connected by a convenient local train and by a series of scenic trails that skirt the waterfront; ferries also run regularly between the villages in summer.

Traveler tips

Monterosso al Mare and its four sister villages (Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore) are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park, so you’ll need to buy a Cinque Terre Card to access the trails that run between them from spring through fall. Opt for the Trekking Card for trail access or the Treno Card for trail access and unlimited rail transport; you can buy 24- or 48-hour options online or at the trail access points inside the park.

People Also Ask
Q:What is Monterosso al Mare known for?
A:

The largest and most cosmopolitan of the Cinque Terre villages, Monterosso is the busiest transport hub for visitors arriving by car and train. It also has the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, and other services. What sets the town apart, though, is its long stretch of sandy beach—a rarity on this rocky coastline.

Q:Is Monterosso worth a visit?
A:

Yes, though Monterosso may lack the storybook charm of the smaller villages along the coastline, its colorful Old Town, lively beach, and wide range of shops and restaurants make it worthy of a stop while exploring the Cinque Terre. Its relatively level Old Town is especially attractive for families or those with limited mobility.

Q:Are the beaches in Monterosso free?
A:

Most of the sandy stretch of waterfront known as Spiaggia Fegina is taken over by beach clubs—or lidos—where you need to rent a sunbed and umbrella for the day. There is a small free public area along this beach, but keep in mind that it fills quickly in the summer and can be very crowded.

Q:Which part of Monterosso is the best?
A:

Monterosso is the only Cinque Terre town that has distinct old and new areas. The older section of town is by far the most charming, with historic churches, winding lanes, and bright townhouses. The newer area, linked by a tunnel and promontory, is home to the Spiaggia Fegina beach, one of Monterosso’s top attractions.

Q:How long is the walk between Monterosso and Vernazza?
A:

Monterosso is connected to Vernazza, the next town along the Cinque Terre coast, by the scenic Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) that continues on past Vernazza to link all five of the villages. The leg between Monterosso and Vernazza is about 2.2 miles (4 km) and takes 1-2 hours to complete.

Q:Is Monterosso a good base for the Cinque Terre?
A:

With its easy access to trains and trails, parking, an array of hotels and other travel services, and a softly sloping historic center, Monterosso is one of the most hassle-free of Cinque Terre’s five villages. Plus, the town offers the finest beach on this stretch of coastline, and opportunities for boating and kayaking.
