Things to do in Saint Thomas Parish
No beach, no problem
Located in the uplands of central Barbados, St. Thomas Parish is one of only two landlocked parishes on the island—but it offers no shortage of things to do. From the subterranean Harrison’s Cave to the nature-filled Welchman Hall Gully and the highest point of the island, St. Thomas Parish is filled with natural wonders. There’s also plenty of history and culture here, including the historic Bagatelle Great House, the Lion Castle Polo Estate, the Portvale Sugar Factory, and the Rock Hall Freedom Monument.

All about Saint Thomas Parish
The best time to visit St. Thomas Parish is from December to April; the weather is dry and pleasant, though it does coincide with the high season. Welchman Hall Gully runs free public tours from December to April while polo season runs from January to April (there are two polo fields in St. Thomas Parish). The Holetown Festival is held in February while the Oistins Fish Festival is in April.
Renting a car is an easy way to get around, if you’re comfortable driving on the left. Taxis are plentiful though expensive. There are no meters and rates are set by the government, but it’s still best to agree on a fare beforehand. There are also public (blue) buses, private (yellow) minibusses, and ZR minivans, all with the same flat fare. Public buses technically have a schedule but run on island time. Private options don’t have a schedule and can get extremely crowded.
Harrison’s Cave is one of the top attractions in Barbados and well worth visiting, but visitors looking for a more adventurous option should look at Cole’s Cave, which may be an extension of Harrison’s Cave. Accessible by Jack in the Box Gully and with three entrances, the cave hasn’t been modified in any way. Once used as a water source for the island and possibly a former hiding spot for runaway slaves, it’s a hidden gem in St. Thomas Parish. Guided tours are available.
