Since Oscar II established it in 1872, King's Park (Kungsparken) has been a favorite among Malmö locals. Covering more than 21 acres (8 hectares) in the center of the city, the park boasts 130 tree species—including a 95-foot (29-meter) Turkish oak and a 100-year-old chestnut tree—several ponds, and an artificial grotto.
Dominating the city’s skyline, Malmö’s 623-foot (190-meter) Turning Torso is the tallest building in Scandinavia. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the structure comprises nine 5-story pentagons, and features a top segment that twists 90 degrees from the building’s base.
Feskekorka—which translates as the ‘Fish Church’—has been part of local life in Gothenburg since 1874, making it the city’s oldest market hall. Housed in a church-inspired building along the riverfront, the lively fish market is crammed with stalls selling fresh-off-the-boat fish and seafood.
Laid out in the 17th century, Haga is Gothenburg’s oldest district and it remains one of the city’s most atmospheric quarters. With its cobbled lanes, old wooden buildings, and abundance of small shops and cafés, it’s a scenic spot for a stroll or a mid-sightseeing coffee break.
Permanently moored in Gothenburg Harbor, the four-masted Barken Viking was built in 1906 and is allegedly one of the largest ships ever built in Scandinavia. Despite its name, the boat bears no relation to the Norse warriors—it served as a merchant ship until retiring from service and being transformed into a floating hotel.
Opened in 2000 and made famous by the popular TV showThe Bridge, the 5-mile (8-kilometer) Øresund Bridge dominates the Øresund Strait—the stretch of water separating Denmark and Sweden. The total length of the road and rail link is 10 miles (16 kilometers), which allows you to travel between the two countries in just 10 minutes.
The Gothenburg Museum was founded in the 1860s, but its art collection didn’t become a separate museum until 1923. The Gothenburg Museum of Art is now Sweden's third largest art museum in terms of physical size and collection size; part of this is attributed to the 1996 expansion to include the Hasselblad Center, museum store, and restaurant.
Gothenburg’s biggest and most popular indoor food market is the buzzing epicenter of the city’s culinary scene. Housed in a 19th-century, barrel-roofed building designed by Swedish architect Hans Hedlund, the Saluhallen Market Hall (Stora Saluhallen) is brimming with artisan produce, lively restaurants, and old-fashioned charm.
