Salzburg, which is located on the Salzbach River, in northern Austria, has many claims to fame. First, it boasts a UNESCO-protected Old Town, an area of Medieval and baroque buildings that sit below the hilltop Fortress Hohensalzburg. Second, the city was Mozart’s birthplace (in 1756), and it still overflows with concerts, paeans, and museums celebrating the great composer. Sealing the deal (for English speakers, at least) is the city's Sound of Music heritage: Salzburg and the surrounding Alps provided the soaring setting for the much-loved musical.
