3 Days in Clearwater for Families

Curated by Nick Dauka travel writer and Central Florida native.

There’s no one right way to plan a family vacation in Florida. The good news is that you don’t need to choose between quaint towns, thrill rides, stunning beaches, and city sights—you can get it all in Clearwater.

With close proximity to Tampa’s theme parks, a diverse culinary scene, educational yet exciting family-friendly attractions, and one of the best beaches in the state, you can tailor your getaway to many interests. Fishing, kayaking, skimboarding, and more splashing under the sun can lead into nights of scavenger hunts and ice cream scoops. Here’s how to spend three days in Clearwater with family.

Bring UV-protective clothing to keep the kids safe in the sun.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the weird and wonderful Dalí Museum.

Day 1

Planning your first day in Clearwater is effortless: Spend as much time as possible by the water! The kids will love digging in the soft sand and splashing in the clear waters. When the time is right, surprise them with a dolphin watching cruise complete with ice cream sundaes on-board.

When the sun sets on Clearwater Beach, take teens on a quick drive over to Safety Harbor for a walk in the moonlight. Combine a history tour and ghost hunting experience with a guided walk through Safety Harbor’s most haunted places.

Day 2

The Sunshine State lives up to its name most days throughout the year, though there are rainstorms that make appearances throughout the summer months. When clouds threaten to ruin a day at the beach, you’ll be prepared with a backup plan: a pirate-themed escape room.

SimCenter Tampa Bay is another great place to wait out a summer storm or escape from too much sun. Located in Clearwater despite its name, this entertainment center features a variety of simulators, including Formula 1 race cars.

Day 3

If you’re checking out of your hotel today, pack up the car and drive a few miles north to Dunedin. This quiet city is best explored on two wheels during a morning historical bike tour.

Since you’re already out and about, continue the drive a bit farther north to Tarpon Springs. The waters of the Anclote River are teeming with wildlife, and the coolest way to get close to these creatures is by paddling through the mangroves in a kayak.
