Itineraries for Your Trip to Bayeux
1 Day in Bayeux for First Timers
Located within a short drive of Paris, the Mont-St-Michel, and at least four UK-bound ferry ports, Bayeux is one of Normandy’s most popular day-trip destinations. Growing up in the UK with a second home in France, I passed through several times with my family—I even remember a primary school “show and tell” where I proudly displayed souvenirs from a visit to the legendary Bayeux Tapestry.
Thanks to its small size, the must-see attractions in Bayeux can easily be squeezed into a day tour, but if it’s your first time, then make sure to get out and explore some of Normandy’s coastline as well. Here’s how to spend one day in Bayeux.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry museum.
The English Channel coast is notorious for British-style weather, so pack an umbrella even in summer.
The best things to do in Bayeux for first timers are all located close together in Bayeux’s Old Town, making it easy to explore on foot. Head straight to the Bayeux Tapestry Museum before the tour buses arrive—the UNESCO World Heritage–listed monument can get crowded. Afterward, opt for a private walking tour and make the most of your time with a custom-made itinerary. Admire the Gothic Bayeux Cathedral, learn about the city’s lace-making history at the Lace Conservatory, and visit the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy.
If it’s your first time in Bayeux, you won’t want to miss one of Normandy’s most important sites, the D-Day beaches, where Allied troops launched the airborne offensive that led to the end of World War II. A guided tour is not only practical—you’ll need your own wheels to reach the various museums and memorials—but it also affords insight into the historic events as you visit the battlefields. This afternoon, walk in the footsteps of the American troops at Omaha Beach, pay your respects at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, and peek inside an old German battery.
Summer evenings are the perfect time to explore some of Normandy’s rolling countryside, dotted with apple orchards and dairies where the region’s famous Camembert and cider are produced. Cap off your 1-day Bayeux itinerary by renting an e-bike and cycling out along the banks of the Aude River. Perhaps stop at a local cidery to sample some cider and calvados (apple brandy), then head back to town after sunset for dinner at one of Bayeux’s riverside restaurants. For dessert, don’t miss out on a classic slice of tarte aux pommes (apple tart).
