Top Activities on the Ground in Angra do Heroísmo

This route starts at Lagoa do Negro and runs through the Serra de Santa Bárbara nature reserve. We know the Cedars of the Bush and the Cryptomerias. This is probably the most pristine trail in the Azores, as you will have the opportunity to pass through the protected area and contemplate the Laurissilva forest.

Come and explore the Fortes de São Sebastião trail, on Terceira island, accompanied by a guide throughout the activity. You will have the opportunity to appreciate ruins of military forts of the XVI and XVII century along the coast, marvel at the volcanic landscapes, and experience contact with nature. You'll be surrounded by the sea as well as endemic vegetation such as the erica azorica. The trail is short, on average it will take approx. 2h30, is of moderate difficulty, and is not flat (difference of approx. 50m-70m in altitude).

The trail is situated in the centre of Terceira island and along the way we will observe the endemic flora of the Azores, large pastures and even some of the island´s fauna. Today's main attraction is “Rocha de Chambre ", a vertical wall located at 708m above sea level with a splendid view over Azinhal valley, Pico Alto. After this climb, time to admire the view from the Pico das Caldeirinhas and Pico Vermelho volcanic caldera. The last part of the trail passes along a dry stone wall in an area dominated by Azorean heather, an endemic floral specie. After lunch, time to get amazed with Algar do Carvão, a volcanic chimney that is, without doubt, the best known volcanic cave in the Azores. Driving to Angra do Heroísmo, we still have time for a short stop to visit Quinta dos Açores..

Discover one of the biggest volcanic craters in the Azores as you embark on a bike ride from Praia da Vitoria. We inform that the stop of Algar do Carvão is closed since October, and will be for 18 months, due to construction works in their visitors center.
