Itineraries for Your Trip to Trieste
3 Days in Trieste for First Timers
Trieste is arguably the most far-flung city on Italy’s mainland—perched on a slip of coastline that juts far into neighboring Slovenia—so it comes as no surprise that I had lived in the Bel Paese for more than two decades before finally making the trip north to spend three days in Trieste.
What I found was one of the most intriguing cultural crossroads in the country, the result of centuries of mixing between Italian, Austrian, and Balkan influences. I sipped il capo in B in Viennese-style coffee houses, dined on Istria’s cabbage-based jota soup, and explored the massive Piazza Unità d’Italia—celebrating Italy’s 19th-century unification—before striking out on day trips. Here are my insider tips on how to cover the must-see attractions in Trieste in three days.
Trieste is famously blustery year-round, so pack layers to ward off its Adriatic winds.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a visit to the Miramare Castle.
Dedicate your first day to exploring Trieste’s headliners. Join a guided walking tour or bus tour with an audio guide of the old town to admire Roman ruins, Habsburgian palaces, and the San Giusto Cathedral, and learn about the city’s history and culture. A stop at the fairytale Castello di Miramare is a must for your first time in Trieste: Visit with skip-the-line tickets or a guided tour.
In the afternoon, experience Trieste’s coffee culture with a coffeehouse itinerary that covers landmarks such as the historic Caffè degli Specchi or Caffè San Marco. Curious gourmands can dig deeper with a Trieste food tour or cooking class in a local home, followed by dinner.
On your second day, head west to experience the surrounding region of Friuli–Venezia Giulia. Join a wine tour through the vineyard-covered hills of Collio to sample local pinot gris, pinot noir, pinot blanc, and ribolla gialla wines, or to the Prosecco Hills to sip Italy's most beloved bubbly directly where it’s produced.
Trieste sits just minutes from Slovenia, and day trips across the border top the list of best things to do in Trieste for first timers. Today, visit A-list destinations, including Lake Bled and its 12th-century Bled Castle, on a full-day tour that also stops in Slovenia’s capital city of Ljubljana. Other day-trip itineraries take you along the scenic Slovenian coastline with a stop in Piran.
Alternatively, join a half-day tour of Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave, both about an hour’s drive from Trieste. Marvel at the 13th-century castle tucked inside a massive karst cavern, then explore sprawling Postojna aboard its electric train.
